These days I’m a keeper: I keep to myself, keep busy, and keep my head down.
Until him.
Sutton Holland.
Annoying, arrogant, spoiled man-child extraordinaire.
And he’s not even trying to hide any of it.
He says he’s shallow.
That he’s blunt to the point of offensive.
That I shouldn’t like him.
So I don’t.
At first.
But then I accidentally get to know him.
And the more I see of him, the more I start to suspect that maybe he’s not so arrogant, spoiled, and shallow after all.
That maybe he’s just a really good liar.
And that maybe—𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦—he’s everything I never knew I was looking for…
This author sure knows how to write dialog! I enjoyed it in the previous book I read and this one is even better. These guys have snarky conversations that are just so interesting that you don’t want to miss a word, yet they never seem over the top. I could have just listened to them talk through the whole book and never gotten bored. It is clear from the very first conversation that they will end up being a perfect match.
I love reading stories about “damaged” characters and watching them overcome and find happiness. Wren is one of those characters who you just can’t help but fall in love with. He has been through so much and never seems to give up which comes in handy once he meets Sutton. Wren is a bit insecure due to burn scars he received from a house fire when he was younger, so he tends to keep to himself. Sutton sort of comes barreling into his life and doesn’t really give Wren much of a chance to hide. He is outgoing and snarky, but it’s clear that Wren can match Sutton jab for jab. Through their interactions, we learn tidbits about each of their lives as they trickle out like breadcrumbs as each character tries to keep their distance but is simply unable to do so.
There is a good bit of backstory to each of these guys, and while that definitely plays a factor into their present, most of the story is showing their relationship growing as they get to know one another. Wren is the somewhat shy, head down nerdy guy, while Sutton is the outgoing, brash, seemingly carefree one. There is a lot below the surface of each of them though and it was extremely enjoyable watching them peel off the layers.
I love when you read a book that shows you how perfect characters are for each other without actually spelling it out. It’s so easy to see and feel that here. They go through some bumps in the road, but thanks for friends/family, it doesn’t last too long, and there isn’t too much pussyfooting around the issues. Suffice to say that I really didn’t want to stop reading about Wren and Sutton and continuing to be a fly on the wall of their relationship. Their banter was wonderful and their sexual chemistry was even more off the charts. Each book I’ve read in this series has gotten better and better. My only niggle here was the pacing which seemed pretty consistent up until almost the end where it just kicked into high gear and felt a little rushed. Aside from that, I absolutely loved it and will be looking for more from Ms. Prescott in the future.
