When One Alpha Isn’t Enough
Blurb
A hillbilly and a former Marine walk into a bar sounds like the opening line of a joke. But it’s no laughing matter for Tyler Warboys when werewolf alphas Rocky and Blaze Blackstone enter the Byte Bar, the computer repair store where he works.
Tyler is instantly attracted to the huge, powerful, but allegedly dangerous creatures. And, miracle of miracles, they feel a connection to him, too. But how can that be? Tyler is human and Rocky and Blaze are not. However, the alphas can smell a faint something on Tyler that has them wondering if he isn’t as human as he’s always thought. But as Tyler has never shifted, how can he be a werewolf?
So many questions, but between the three of them, they are bound to find some answers. Surely three isn’t always a crowd, especially where love is concerned?
Finally Friday came—results day. Both alphas showed up at the Byte Bar just before closing and they drove in Rocky’s pickup across town to the clinic. The atmosphere in the truck was tense. Rocky gripped the wheel, his knuckles turning white. Blaze sat ramrod straight next to Tyler in the back, even though his huge frame hardly fit the cramped space. Tyler had no idea what they had to be nervous about. They knew who they were and who they were mated to. Tyler…didn’t. Yet he felt reasonably calm. But then he always did when so close to these alphas. He reasoned whatever would be, would be. He couldn’t change it now. Couldn’t have changed it a week earlier when they’d last made this journey.
In an effort to try and lower the growing tension, Tyler said, “I’m going to insist you two come into the exam room with me this time.”
“Thank fuck!” Blaze muttered and seemed to lose some of his stiff posture. He undid Tyler’s seat belt and pulled the smaller man closer. Wrapping an arm around him, Blaze gave him a kiss with more than a hint of tongue.
What few concerns Tyler had, vanished.
“Thanks, bud,” Rocky added, seeming to loosen his death grip on the steering wheel. “You don’t know what that means to us.”
What would it mean to them if Tyler wasn’t one of them? He’d looked at himself in the bathroom mirror every morning, trying to spot any changes. He hadn’t seen any. He’d even drawn back the drapes of an evening, staring up at the moon and willing himself to shift. Again, nothing changed. Before he could think more on his lack of progress, Rocky pulled into the parking lot and shut off the engine.
Tyler wasn’t sure if he needed Blaze’s and Rocky’s physical touch more than they needed his. Either way, they crossed the parking lot holding hands, Tyler in the middle. Getting through the sliding doors of the shifter clinic was easy enough, but they had to break their connection momentarily to get through a couple of internal doors.
At the reception desk, a cheerful-looking woman with long brown hair looked up from her keyboard, smiled at them, held up a finger, then spoke into her headset. “Okay, Esther, no problem. You’re booked in to see Doctor Tom tomorrow.” She then nodded, even though the other party couldn’t see her, said goodbye, and typed something on her keyboard. Pulling the headset around her neck, she turned back to Tyler, Rocky, and Blaze. “Sorry to have kept you waiting. How can I help you guys today?”
“I’m Tyler Warboys and these are—”
“His mates,” Blaze added.
Tyler’s heart swelled. This was the first time they’d declared this in public. Could they still be his mates if he wasn’t like them? “I have an appointment with Dr. Lillian.”
“And we’re going into the doctor’s office with him,” Rocky stated, flexing his biceps.
If anything, the cheerful woman grew even more cheerful. “If that’s okay with you, Mr. Warboys.”
Tyler nodded and smiled goofily. “It is.”
Both Rocky and Blaze gave his hands a gentle squeeze.
“Dr. Lillian is running a little behind schedule but she’ll be with you guys as soon as possible. Please take a seat, your nurse will call you in shortly.”
Tyler thanked her, and the still-joined threesome found seats, Rocky and Blaze pulling theirs even closer to Tyler’s.
