Two huge mistakes. One second chance.
Griffin
Music’s a harsh mistress, if you want to make a living by her. Years ago, when I was on my way up, I met a man. Sparks flew, hearts leaped, you know the song. But I was chasing my dream all across America, and Lee was tied to our hometown. Hell, I was too old for him anyway, even then. So I left, and the connection we’d had withered and died, except sometimes in the lyrics I wrote. Now I’m back home and I’ve met him again at the lowest point in my life. He’s still gorgeous and kind, but I’m battered and faded and paying for my mistakes. He can do way better.
Lee
When I was twenty, I thought the hardest thing I’d ever do was watch Griffin Marsh walk out of my life. Well, newsflash, fate always has more crap waiting for you. I spent more nights than I want to remember torn between hating him for leaving and wishing I could’ve gone with him, but life went on with the good, the bad, and the ugly. Now Griffin’s back and he’s a silver fox, still unfairly hot and talented. I lost my sister years ago, and my life is far less complicated. But, despite Griffin’s current disaster, he’ll be heading off soon to concerts like Rocktoberfest and the wide musical world. Letting myself fall for him again would mean another round of being left behind. I’m not going to do that to myself, no matter how much I want to erase the shadows from Griffin’s eyes.
A second-chances, age gap, hurt-comfort musician romance.

REVIEW:
One of the best things about getting to read and do reviews is that, every once in awhile, you get a book that impacts you so greatly that you not only slow down and savor the book. You share how it is impacting, you as you read it, with your friends. You make changes in your life because of the message it sent. This book did that and I can guarantee with certainty that it will be on my The Best of 2024 list.
One moment in time…one tiny moment can change your life forever! Looking down to find his phone, that fell on the floor of the car while driving, shouldn’t have wound up killing someone and totally altered Rock’s singing legend and mentor Griffin Marsh’s life forever. But it did and now he’s just trying to do his community service at the Senior Care/rest home facilities back in his old home town in the middle of nowhere Iowa and keep on his parole officer’s good side. Because he still doesn’t believe he deserves to be free and Linda Bellingham, wife/mother/teacher, is dead in the ground because he screwed up. But what he doesn’t realize is that his “one that got away” is now the nursing supervisor of the facility he has been assigned to for the foreseeable future. Lee heard music coming from the common area of the faculty he helps run but can’t believe his eyes when he spots his former lover, THE Griffin Marsh, belting out music to their senior residents. And damn if he didn’t age nicely into the silver fox he has become. Unfortunate Lee knows he’s younger but time has not been so easy on him. And Griffin is a part of the reason why he is like he is now. But can the two forge a working relationship or is there just too much water under the bridge? And is there any possibility for more?
How many times have you taken your eyes off the road because something to do with your cell phone? I know mine is attached to a heavy duty magnet holder attached to my AC vent but a hard jar from a pot hole, that I didn’t see, has sent it to the floor and under my feet while driving. And trying to grab it and keep driving can be really hard. This book has changed my thinking on where I hang my phone now. I can admit, as most people will, that this has happened more than once but I am now changing up my place for my phone on the car so, if that happens again, it will fall on the passenger foot well of my car and I will be safe to continue driving without worry it will mess with my gas pedal until I can get to safety to retrieve it. Griffin’s one moment in looking down changes countless lives. Linda lost her life. Her husband lost his wife. Her daughters lost their mother. Her students lost their teacher. But Griffin also lost a lot that day too. He lost his ability to forgive himself. He lost his freedom to do what he loved most… perform for his fans and keep his career alive a bit longer. He lost his self-worth all because a momentary lapse of judgement. Unfortunately this happens all over the world on a fairly common basis. Drivers get distracted by their cell phones and someone winds up paying the price for their lapse of judgement/ bad choice. This book brought that realization to the forefront for me and has actually changed my life. And I am sharing this with all my friends because of the deep impact reading this amazing book this had on my life!
I never saw this coming when I signed up for The Road to Rocktoberfest 2024 this year but I should have know that the talented and gift author Kaje Harper would blow me away as she has the last two years. But never in my wildest dreams did I expect to have my life so deeply impacted. So thank you Kaje for writing this 💕 and if it saves even just one life for the horror of distracted driving then you did a great thing!
This book is a “Must Read” in my mind! And hopeful you will read and share this knowledge with those surrounding you too. Griffin and Lee’s story needs to be heard and learned from.
