BLURB:
Good fences do NOT make good neighbors, especially when that neighbor is a city idiot with more dollars than sense.
Emery McAvoy is a walking disaster who should never be allowed to step foot on another ladder. Heck, I’d bet my favorite Golden Girls T-shirt that he rearranged his entire life because his ten-year-old daughter likes ponies.
It’s rather inconvenient, then, that he’s one of the hottest, sweetest men I’ve ever met. I regret looking him up on that dating app because now I have photographic evidence that he’s exactly my type.
Not that I’d ever fall for the city boy next door.
Rough Country is a grumpy sunshine romance that features a burnt-out city boy with a knack for trouble, a surly, brokenhearted cowboy with an enviable T-shirt collection, and a ten-year-old girl who loves horses, boots, and swirly skirts.
REVIEW:
This book! GAH! It was such a rollercoaster ride with ALL the feels. The “world” this book takes place in is familiar to those readers who’ve read Rebel Sky Ranch and Wild Heart Ranch series. This story starts off with a strong enemies to lovers vibe when Emery moves into the property next to Woody’s place. There interactions while Emery is trying to get the house livable for him and his daughter are funny. Things get downright hilarious after Stevie, Emery’s 10 year old daughter shows up. Woody’s cousin Rowdy is a welcome supporting character who ends up working for Emery too – helping him manage the property and the animals 🙂 Woody assumes he’s helping manage Emery 😉 He is not and man he needs an HEA too!
I loved everything about this book. The reveal of Woody’s secret identity. Woody’s prickly exterior hiding an extremely sensitive and wounded heart. Emery realizing that he can maybe make a real family and not keep hooking up and keeping that part of his life separate from his life with his daughter. I adored Emery’s mother who knew her son better than he knew himself. I loved the references to the other series and some fortuitous cameos 😀 Mostly I loved how these two men figured out that they were better together than apart. There are some bumps in the road and both Woody and Emery have to face facts. They are NOT just hookup guys. And they ended up in a place where they understood what they wanted and that perfect should not be the enemy of the good. Accidents happen. Mistakes were made in cake decorating. But at the end of the day, this new family unit is ready for their Happily Ever After.
One of my favorite Kelly Fox books yet – and that’s saying something. Highly recommended.
