BLURB:
When Skylar moved to Wildflower, Colorado for grad school, the last thing he expected was to be suddenly single and… running over a tortoise on his new bicycle? Good thing Ezra, the local veterinarian, is also a sexy, older man. Ezra is the quiet type, and straight, but that won’t stop Skylar’s delicious crush or Ezra’s curiosity from climbing the peak of love!
Peak of Love is a standalone low-angst, small-town romantic comedy novella featuring a bi awakening, talkative/quiet pairing, and a tortoise named Scooter and a dog named Rocky.
REVIEW:
Skylar, a Comparative Literature grad student, moves to Wildflower, Colorado from Florida Talk about culture shock! But he is trying to get into the local scene and find some new friends. When he runs over a tortoise on a trail ride on his mountain bike, he freaks out. He ends up at the nearest vet office where he meets Ezra, the veterinarian. At first Ezra thinks Skylar is taking the piss, but it turns out that Skylar really IS freaked out thinking he hurt the animal (which he of course ends up adopting).
Skylar is very much smitten with Ezra immediately, but he can tell that he confuses Ezra too. At first he thinks maybe Ezra is homophobic because of his reaction, but it turns out he’s just introverted and shy and not a great talker. He’s happy on his own when he doesn’t have his kids although he admits to himself that he is lonely since Xerox, his best friend moved to Denver and then has kind of ghosted him. He likes Skylar though and they form a friendship. Skylar gets Ezra to take him camping and things begin to shift even though Skylar in no way tries to push anything with Ezra.
Ezra’s kids know he’s behaving differently and are encouraging. When he talked to his best friend though, things get a little strained before them. But he also encourages Ezra to explore this with Skylar since he has never connected with that many people. But being attracted to and doing anything with a man is completely new to Ezra. Thankfully Skylar is happy to move along at Ezra’s pace – unlike his past failed relationships.
Their love of their pets and also the dates they go on lead to them exploring their relationship. And of course then everyone wants to get in on the act 😉 While they may be taking their time, they are definitely building an adult relationship based on friendship and trust and desire and true love.
Well this was completely adorable! I’ve been (im)patiently waiting for a new book from Zoe Lee for a while, but this was definitely worth the wait!
I loved everything about this story. The main characters. The setting. The teenagers. The new and old friends. The pets! Literally everything was sweet and cute and fun and funny. Ezra and Skylar are very much opposites. The chatty one and the silent one. The established professional and the grad student. The divorced dad of teenage kids and the happy go lucky single guy. Their meet cute was hilarious and Skylar with the bunnies? Precious! I really liked how Skylar went for what he wanted in a very unlikely and considered way given his natural tendency to just jump in with both feet and both barrels. Ezra struggles a little since he’s not even really used to interacting with people besides his ex-wife, his kids and his employees, since his best friend moved away. They are such opposites and yet when they come together, they are perfectly matched. Loved the pet angle in bringing them together and cementing their love story. If you’re in the mood for a fun, funny and sweet opposites attract romance with some swoonworthy moments and a lovely HEA, this is the book for you. Highly recommneded.
