REVIEW
This is the first novella in the Divergent Omegaverse series and a prequel to the main books to come. It is a short story, there isn’t a grand plot in this book, it is very much a setting the scene for the books that follow.
We are introduced to the Starling family, Lane and Derick and find out more about them and their 8 sons, both biological and adopted but all are very much loved and supported.
I enjoyed the unique twist on the traditional omegaverse genre, and the explanation about what Divergent is and how Werewolf Society views it. The story very much focuses on the dynamics and challenges faced by the characters. We get introduced to all the sons, who will get their own books in the series and you can already see what a diverse bunch they are. They are typical siblings with fierce loyalty to the family but the snark, and underlying tensions that are present in most families. I am really looking forward to the other books to find out more about their son’s lives.
The relationships between Derick and Lane and their sons are central to the story’s emotional depth and development. The dynamics within the Starling family are complex and multifaceted, reflecting both the challenges and the bonds that tie them together.
Derick and Lane navigate their roles as parents while dealing with their own personal struggles. As Lane ages, his heats are becoming unpredictable and a challenge for both him and Derick to manage. Their sons play crucial roles in the story, highlighting the generational differences and the evolving understanding of identity and relationships within the family. It is plain to see that Lane has an ulterior motive in calling his sons home, one which revolves around them finding their mates and settling down, giving him the grandchildren he obviously wants.
The interactions between parents and sons are marked by moments of tension, growth, and mutual support, showcasing the strength and resilience of family bonds even in the face of adversity.
