Town Bronze: In 1812, Jasper Goodhew departs from sleepy Somerset for his first London season, anticipating fun, frolics and drunken debauchery. But to his consternation, he finds that a spanking from the firm hand of a particular older man sets him ablaze.
Can Jasper and Sir Mortimer Cleverly overlook their unorthodox introduction to become friends? Or is Jasper unable to resist his deepest instincts?
Pantaloons and Petticoats: In the autumn of 1812, Barney Marshall is a carefree young man, able to afford every variety of entertainment in Regency London while remaining heart-whole and fancy-free. Impeccable Credentials: In the autumn of 1812, aristocrat Julian Buchanan faces a crisis. He must choose between the trappings of his privileged life or the man he loves. Will Julian submit to his father’s decree and marry to further the family name? Or can he find the strength to break free?
Excerpt from Town Bronze
There was a loud hubbub emanating from the drawing room. Holding court was young Buchanan, surrounded by an ever-growing coterie. With a sense of resignation, Mortimer spotted Jasper on the periphery of the group. His too-short hair was naturally ruffled, and his cheeks and the tips of his ears were pink from over-imbibing. He looked slightly perplexed, deposited on the fringes and excluded from the inner circle for reasons unknown to him.
Mortimer didn’t have a particular type, but he’d never inclined towards ingénues, real or pretend. But Jasper’s slightly baffled eagerness, along with his undeniable prettiness, was admittedly endearing. Intending to pour a drink of his choice from the impressive array, Mortimer approached the sideboard. He could have asked one of Blanche’s girls to fulfil this small request, but it seemed an unfair diversion from more profitable opportunities.
The most slavish and excitable of Buchanan’s followers were in full flow around their idol so Mortimer assumed he would remain unobserved. But as he reached the sideboard, Jasper’s head turned towards him like a puppy summoned by his master. Those beseeching eyes that seemed to change colour with his mood held that confused, slavish look. Mortimer was tempted to crook a finger and beckon him to trot at his heels.
Pouring himself a bumper of his preferred claret, he left the room, escaping into the quiet expanse of the hall.
“Excuse me.”
Repressing a sigh, Mortimer faced Jasper who was swaying slightly.
“Yes, what is it now?”
Jasper gave an owlish blink as if he’d forgotten why he was there.
“Apologise,” he said, those mutable eyes brightening with inspiration. “I have to apologise.”
“We’ve been through all that already. You are very sorry and have confirmed that my hair in no way resembles a cauliflower of any variety. As far as I am concerned the episode is closed.”
“Oh.” The young man looked utterly downcast.
At this point, Mortimer should have wished him a pleasant evening and continued to the parlour to sip his wine. Or he could have crossed the piazza to a particular tavern and found a willing man to join him in the private bedroom.
But Jasper was falling like a ripe peach into his hands. That arresting combination of determination and innocence was more than a red-blooded man could resist.
“Unless you want something more of me…”
Jasper glanced up and Mortimer could see a wealth of confusion on his features. Unspoken desire, unrealised yearning, and conflicted emotions that Jasper was probably unaware of and would never have acted on in the cold light of day.
Mortimer took a small, deliberate step towards him.
“Perhaps you believe you deserve to be punished?”
There it was again. That tell-tale, unmistakeable flicker. An irresistible combination of excitement and uncertainty darkened Jasper’s eyes to stormy teal.
“How?” The young man stood very still, instantly sobered by this exchange.
“However you choose.”
The bright light flickered out, replaced by an expression of frozen bemusement.
“Since pistols at dawn are long outlawed, I can’t issue you with a challenge to a duel. And I can’t imagine you’ve been in London long enough to join the most prestigious clubs, let alone be blackballed from them.” Mortimer imagined a list of fanciful social ostracisms to put Jasper at his ease.
In the same light tone, he continued, “There’s always six of the best.”
That unconscious burst of heat briefly lit Jasper’s eyes.
“Is that what you deserve?”
“Yes.” It was almost a whisper.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. I’m certain.” The response was firm and clear. Jasper’s precise needs might be a mystery to him. Yet his instincts had taken charge, enhanced by alcohol and the decadent premises.
The delicate negotiation might have continued longer simply for the sake of provocation. However, a new crowd of customers had approached the front door and were in the process of being admitted.
“Come this way,” Mortimer commanded, turning towards the parlour.
