He calls me his dark angel, but I’m merely a killer. A bringer of death.
Luca Davenport
He is my angel, sent to be my death bringer to save me from my tormentors and betrayers—those who sold me into slavery when I was only eight years old. Angel came in with guns blazing and black wings that were made to crush his enemies and envelope me in love. He belongs to me and I belong to him. We are destined. After he saves me from my captors, we hunt down the remaining men who had abused me for eleven years to make them pay in blood.
Dante Varga
He is a broken boy of no more than nineteen. He sees me as an angel, but I’m simply a killer. An assassin for hire. I can’t save him. I can’t take care of him. There’s no room left in my dying soul to care about someone. Not anymore. But I can’t turn him away either. I should kill him. He’s a witness. But I feel compelled to protect him at all costs. Saving him will either shatter the ice around my heart or destroy me. Either way, Luca is dangerous.
REVIEW:
Admission – I read book 2 before this one, and while I don’t believe you need to read them in order to understand or enjoy them, it’s probably a good idea. This installment takes place somewhat during the same time period as book 2, so while we see Malik and Sonny in their respective District roles, Malik is still fighting a relationship with Sonny.
However, this installment is about Luca and Dante. Dante, on a job for the District, finds Luca an unknown captive of the group he was hired to take out. With his presence seeming to be an unknown entity and the circumstances in which he finds Luca, Dante takes Luca with him.
Luca had been held captive for 11 years, since he was 8 years old, who had been trained to be little more than a young sex slave. He was prevented from learning anything beyond what a young boy should know. His stunted growth in this aspect made him extremely vulnerable in the outside world. Dante’s hope and plan was to teach Luca to stand up for and take care of himself, something which he had never been allowed or taught to do.
Luca, on the other hand, believes Dante is his Angel of Death, the slayer of his demons, and he has no aspirations of leaving his side. It takes a bit for Dante to accept this, and its easy to see and understand how difficult it is for Luca to make up for 11 years of abuse. Little by little, Luca grows more confident, stronger and more able to stand on his own. The tables are turned when he hires the District to help take out those who hurt him, but there are a few twists and turns along the way that make it an interesting story.
I’ve really enjoyed this series. This one didn’t pack quite the punch as book 2, but I still really enjoyed it. I’m hoping there is more to come from this world, as there are a number of other characters I’d like to see more of.
