REVIEW:
Cal Armstrong and Austin MacIsaac have been best friends forever. They grew up together and after some trouble at home, Cal even lived with Austin’s family their senior year of high school. Austin went to college and then married. His wife passed away from cancer though shortly after their wedding and now five years have passed. Austin feels like he’s ready for love again. And the only one he’s interested in is his best friend Cal. He has had feelings for him since they were teenagers, but he didn’t want to screw up their friendship and Cal needed his family.
Cal has been in love with his best friend for years, but he married and so there wasn’t anything for him there. Now Austin approaches him about dating. Cal is frankly surprised but he doesn’t say no. Their first date is sooooo awkward. In fact Cal is almost going to call the whole thing off. But he really doesn’t have any interest in anyone else. So they try again. Things go much better 😉
Austin and Cal have their own loves but they are so intertwines. Cal’s still got issues with his mother – who frankly is cold and abusive. Austin can’t stand to see his friend mistreated, but it’s Cal’s call as to what he can put up with. Their are also some professional opportunities that could potentially cause some challenges. But when these guys are in, they are definitely all in 🙂
I cannot even express how happy I was when Amy Aislin announced that she was writing the second book in this series. I absolutely loved Home for a Cowboy and I’ve been waiting semi-patiently for this book for some time now 🙂 For me, the wait was totally worth it. I love this series and the setting. The characters from the first book are present in this book, but it’s really Cal and Austin’s story. And it’s a really lovely best friends to lovers story. Yes, there are a few bumps in the road, but overall it’s a fairly low-angst romance. Cal’s mother is truly a toxic presence but he’s reluctant to cut ties there. Austin is encouraging and supportive. He loves and respects and appreciates Cal sooo much and he’s tired of the abuse that Cal has taken all these years from a mother who has never been much of a mother and sees her son as her servant who has had to earn his keep his entire life. The biggest hurdle for these men is the fear that somehow they might lose their friendship if things don’t work out romantically. This is the most important relationship in their lives both of them. I loved that there weren’t any games and that they each needed to be all in on this. While things seemed a bit awkward at first, once they got past that, things progressed in a realistic way. I loved the care and concern both men exhibited for each other – both in their relationship and their jobs.
Honestly I loved this book and this series and I hope we get more stories in this world. Highly recommended.
