When one of the leaders of the village coven fails to show up for the weekly knitting meeting, Hyde finds themselves investigating a horrific murder side by side with their long-term crush, Teresa Vega.
Suspicion immediately falls on other members of their group. Hyde and Teresa struggle to find answers to the growing list of questions. It’s made all the more difficult when the killer has them in their sights.

A sharp horn drew their attention outside. Teresa had obviously woken up. Hyde danced over to peer through one of the windows at the double-decker bus permanently parked to the left of the bookshop.
It was a lovely blue-and-cream vintage bus converted into a flat on the top floor and a taco truck on the lower. Teresa Vega had moved into the village from Ireland after her mother had passed away. Her father had gone back to Mexico practically the second after his wife had been buried but hadn’t spoken with his daughter in years.
Teresa was the polar opposite of Hyde. Piercings, tattoos, long brown hair, and a devil-may-care attitude. She rode a vintage motorcycle and cooked the best mole tacos.
And Hyde had been hopelessly smitten from the first day they’d met the witch.
“Knock, knock.” Teresa stepped into the shop still in her pyjamas, somehow managing to seem stunningly beautiful despite her rumpled state. “Fancy a coffee this morning?”
Hyde forced themselves to converse somewhat normally. It took effort to put a question together. “How’s everything at Guac-A-Mole?”
“It’s mole. Like mow-lay. Not like the annoying beast from The Wind in the Willows.” Teresa groaned. “Mole like the sauce.”
“I know. But I like saying mole.”
“It’s not Guac-A-Mole like whack-a-mole. This happens every time my Yank cousin visits, doesn’t it?” She sighed dramatically, flopping down into one of the armchairs. By nature, she had a gracefulness Hyde never managed to achieve.
“The accent gets stuck in my head. Mole. Vole. Soul.” Hyde couldn’t stop listing words for a moment. They shook their head and tried to get their brain to not be their brain. “Sorry.”
“Don’t be. Oh, bollocks. It’s a ‘Shh’ day. I didn’t see the sign.” Teresa leaned forward; her hand hovered over Hyde’s arm but didn’t touch them. “I’m so sorry. I’ll tiptoe out and bring you tacos for lunch as an apology.”
The cats followed Teresa to the door, then returned to Hyde, who hadn’t moved. It was always refreshing to live in a village where everyone understood neurodivergence from personal experience.
Hyde wandered towards the front of the shop, staring out the window at the double-decker bus with a wistful sigh. They wished it were easier to spill their feelings.
Mortar rubbed against their leg.
“I’m aware I’m ridiculously obvious in my adoration. Someone will undoubtedly put a stake through me and spare me the heartache when Teresa turns me down. Okay, mildly dramatic. Maybe a splinter in my finger. Are you laughing at me?”
Mortar only purred in response.
