REVIEW:
This is an interesting additional to this series centered around a magical coin. In this story both Orphium, a fae trickster and Leoric, a former warrior/mercenary, are vying for the coin that pops up in the small village of Barrowdeep. Leoric stopped at the town for a rest and was offered a job – without being given all the details. But he was tired of the fighting and killing and he had plenty of experience digging graves, so he stayed. He has taken on the protection of the people of the village and he takes his job seriously.
Leoric doesn’t trust the fae on principle and he particularly doesn’t trust Orphium. For his part Orphium has his own baggage – having been cast out and trying to fill his hollow self with the trinkets and memories of the humans he encounters – winning them “fair and square” by the games of chance he runs. The townspeople are skeptical at first, but they won’t turn away anyone in need. So he stays.
Leoric does not get over his skepticism and he is sure that Orphium is taking advantage of the good people in this town. He’s determined to catch him doing wrong. But he can’t help but be attracted to the beautiful fae. And Orphium is equally entranced by the strong and capable Leoric. But they are definitely not friends. They spend the night together but that does not improve their relationship. Add to the fact that Leoric has discovered what appear to be a very valuable coin that Orphium is determined to get his hands on and well things get worse between them.
Can they find a way to get along and solver the larger problem of Barrowdeep and the undead?? You’ll have to read to find out.
This was a pretty fast-paced story that has Orphium careening into town in his magical caravan and the townspeople welcoming him despite his late and unexpected arrival. They give him a place to stay, but he has his plans to take what he needs from them. Leoric is the real skeptic – he know about the Fae and more than he lets on initially. Orphium knows more about him too though – so they continue to be at cross-purposes. When Orphium shares his past with Leoric though, he begins to have some sympathy for the outcase fae. There are reasons for his behavior and Orphium is having a bit of a change of heart as well. They have to learn to work together to overcome the other more pressing problems in Barrowdeep though and that takes some work 🙂 An interesting addition to this multi-author series. Recommended.
