Vic Koudelka has a problem saying the word ‘no.’
Need three dozen cookies baked for a seven a.m. class party? He’s your guy.
Dog walker quit at the last minute? He’ll wrangle your four rambunctious Golden Retrievers without complaint.
As the nanny for two high-energy kids, a volunteer at the shelter, and a skateboard instructor his days are filled juggling it all. Yet when he adopted a three-legged iguana named Gojira, his focus shifted. Now he’s determined to orchestrate a fundraiser to help the hard-to-place animals in the Gaynor Beach Animal Shelter.
Local librarian, Percy Reyes, thinks Vic is too much. Too eager. Too friendly. Too overextended. He does his best to ignore Vic and his young charges whenever they come into the library… until Vic gives him that wide, dimpled smile and Percy begins to rethink his no hookups with library patrons policy.
Percy only has himself, and his growing attraction to Vic, to blame when he agrees to help Vic with the fundraiser. Can the pair keep things strictly business? Or will Vic’s exuberant passion for life prove even more impressive in the bedroom?
REVIEW:
This is book 3 of this multi authored series and we get to see more of Arthur (I hope he gets his own book at some point.) and the animal shelter he runs as well as meeting some new characters both animal and people wise.
Percy is one of the local librarians and has never had much success dating. He just doesn’t think the same way as everyone else (undiagnosed neuro divergence) and can get very overwhelmed in some situations. His best friend Claudia is his everything. They helped each other through difficult childhoods and even live next door to each other now as adults. However, Claudia now has a partner and is keen for Percy to live life a bit more and to find a partner of his own.
Vic Koudelka at first glance is the complete opposite of Percy. He is extroverted, has multiple jobs, mostly volunteering and will do anyone a favour at any time. After dropping some towels off at the animal shelter, he ends up offering to run a fundraiser for Arthur to help with the extra funding the exotic and disabled pets Arthur has at the rescue centre.
There is so much more to Vic though. When we first meet him, I assumed that he was doing what he does because he was a really nice guy, down on his luck (all true) with not many other options (not true). His background and on-going issues with his family were not what I was expecting at all, which was really good. I like being surprised.
Percy, with Claudia’s nudging agrees to help Vic with the fundraiser and as a result find himself in situations that challenge him, but he gets through them and gains some confidence in who is as a result, also helped by his growing relationship with Vic. Vic never tries to change Percy though. He doesn’t see Percy’s differences as anything that need changing, they are just part of what make Percy, Percy.
I don’t feel like you will have needed to read the other books in the series to enjoy this one but I do think you should read the other books because they are all good.
