With the kids out of school for the summer, Detective Jude Byrne takes everyone on vacation to Arizona to visit the Grand Canyon and his grandfather, Running Eagle. The trip will be a chance for everyone to relax and enjoy some fun in the sun without a cold case to work or ghosts to hunt. Little does Jude know he’s dead wrong on both counts.
While driving through Navajo Nation on the way to a family reunion, psychic Copeland Forbes has a terrifying vision. Several women scream in agony while another begs for help. It turns out four Navajo women have disappeared without a trace over the last six months, the last being college student, Prairie Moon. With no clues to their whereabouts, the cases have all gone cold.
Wanting to help, Jude offers the services of the Salem Cold Case team to the Navajo tribal police force, which happens to be manned by three of Jude’s childhood bullies. Not sure who he can trust, Jude turns to Cope and Tennyson in hopes they can contact the missing women’s spirits for some clue to the killer’s identity.
REVIEW:
Disclaimer – This is book 19 in the Haunted Souls series, plus it is intrinsically connected to Pandora’s Cold Case psychic series. All this means if you have not read any of either series, you will need to do so before you partake of this book.
Where to start. Another stellar story form Pandora in this series. This particular story really hit home for me, on a few levels. Don’t get me wrong, I am always moved or touched or amazed by Pandora’s stories, but this one hit home for me. The state I live in has seven Indian reservations that cover a majority of the state. So, when Pandora touches on the plight of missing Native American Women, it resonates deeply for me. Unlike in this story most of these women are never heard from or seen again. Her portrayal of native life is spot on and heartbreaking to say the least. I have always loved her overall theme of found family. But this story sheds light on the family dynamics of the Native American people. Pandora, thank you for your honest portrayal of their lives and lifestyle.
Which leads me to the other thing I just loved about this story. Worldbuilding is always on going in this series and I was so excited for where this story took us. The state of Arizona is a favorite of mine. It’s diverse terrain and stunning vistas, create a wonderful backdrop for the latest mystery for my favorite Scooby gang to solve.
Pandora’s characters continue to find new depths with each new story. Experiencing Jude’s life on the reservation, starts to shed light on the outside forces that forged the man he is today. We also see Everly use her abilities to aid Jude and Cope in solving the mystery surrounding the missing Native American women. The broadening of the found familial ties amongst all the characters in the series continues to strengthen exponentially. As they all come together to support, love and solve these intricate mysteries together. FYI, plot twist incoming on who was involved in these cold cases.
Once again, Pandora weaves a mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end. If you haven’t picked up this fantastic series yet, I don’t know what you are waiting for. These stories, combine some of my most favorite things, in extremely well written stories. So do yourself a favor and run to your favorite eBook purchasing site and snap this one up. As usual, I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
