Synopsis
They’ve been there for each other through death and life, through pain and joy. Their love life has held them together through all external dangers. But what happens when the threat seems to come from within?
Charlie, half werewolf, has never felt so uncertain. Everything he’s trusted in — his eyesight, his psychic ability, his confidence in making decisions — is under attack. Even his mate, his Life dancer, Luis, seems untrustworthy.
Luis, a psychic vampire, is consumed by terror and paranoia. Unable to tell fact from fiction, and feeling Charlie pulling away, he lashes out.
These two lovers who have stood the test of time find themselves on unsteady ground. Can their love prevail despite the terror working its way through the pack?

Charlie rearranged himself, kneeling on the floor and resting one hand on Luis’s thigh. He didn’t gaze up into his lover’s face. Instead, closing his eyes, he struggled to wade through all the emotions he felt. Some of them were his, some Luis’s. As the fears he’d been trying to bury rose in the back of his throat like bile, he started to pull his shields back up.
“Please don’t shut me out,” Luis said. He sent Charlie a vision borne of his better eyesight, one of their positions now. “I don’t necessarily want you on your knees in front of me. It feels wrong somehow.”
“Unless I’m about to give you head,” Charlie said, trying for a teasing and relaxed effect. He knew he failed at Luis’s bark of forced laughter. “All right, no distraction.”
He took a breath, attempting to enjoy Luis’s scent of dark cocoa and coffee. Giving that up as a lost cause at least for the moment, he got to his feet and drew Luis over to the bed to sit with him. Their thighs touched. He took his lover’s hands. “Let’s share one thing each. One at a time. Maybe we can get to the base of what’s bothering us. Do you want me to go first?”
“Yes, but not because I’m scared. I don’t know how to put my fears into words.”
Charlie nodded and said, “Jack Sowerby’s decision to bring all the magical creatures out of the shadows and into the knowledge of the general public is probably the right thing to do. But it’s not going to be without bloodshed.” He swallowed against the terror that clawed at his throat. “I know I sound calm about it, but I’m frightened. For us. For our pack. For all the werewolves. And beyond the werewolves. There may be genocide.”
“The humans are doing that enough to themselves,” Luis said. “Do you really think they’d put aside all their prejudice to band together and fight us?”
