Just a little Love Bite: A vampire tracker thinks he’s missed his chance, only to discover his beloved in the most unlikely of places.
Henry Cosker knows he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. His uncle’s abuse took care of that. Still, when he learns his uncle is out of jail and begins getting mysterious—and chilling—messages from an unknown number, he puts two and two together. Even though it’s against his uncle’s parole, Henry knows the man is after him. Getting run off the road, he does the only thing he can think of… he runs into the woods and jumps a fence.
As it’s been a few years since anyone in Gerald Wintry’s coven has found a beloved—the other half of their soul—Gerald figures he’s missed his opportunity. Over the centuries, he’s seen that Fate’s gifts come in waves, and he’s resigned himself to having to wait until the next round. That changes when, while following up on a tripped sensor, Gerald spots a human running into the back of the garden maze. Tracking him down, he learns his name is Henry, and he’s Gerald’s beloved.
Except, Henry is wary of strangers, and for good reason. With a little help from a few friends, Gerald convinces his beloved that he can be trusted. Can Gerald keep Henry safe from the specters of his past?
REVIEW:
Note: While this is the 32nd book in this series, it can be read as a standalone.
I enjoyed this quick visit to Master Adalric Bachmeier’s coven where Gerald, part of the vampire security team, finally meets his beloved. He’s sort of given up since so many in the coven have found their beloveds, but it’s been a while since any new fated mates have been discovered. Gerald finds his in a most serendipitous way – but it’s sure a good thing that he does!
Henry has suffered at TBI thanks to an abusive family member. Thankfully he survived, but he’s definitely not the same as he was before. Luckily his mom supported him and his abusive Uncle was convicted and sent to prison. But now he’s out and Henry is getting threatening messages – so he assumes it’s only a matter of time before his uncle shows up. He’s in touch with Law Enforcement an they are helping him as much as they can.
When Henry gets run off the road and enters the Bachmeier estate, security is triggered and Gerald goes to check out the problem. He scents his mate and realizes immediately that it’s Henry. But Henry doesn’t know about paranormals. He’s being pursued by shifters and Gerald makes sure that they capture at least one of them to question.
Surprisingly Henry takes the news of the paranormal world pretty easily. He knows he’s really attracted to Gerald and he wants to pursue that. He’s never been in a relationship before though, so he’s a bit tentative about how to approach that. Then there is the little issue of a jealous previous human donor who isn’t happy to lose access to Gerald.
Of course Henry’s abusive uncle doesn’t give up. But he’s not aware that Henry now has help on his side in the form of an entire coven of vampires who will stop at nothing to keep Henry safe 🙂
True to the pattern of these stories, there is a meeting that shocked both the paranormal and human sides of this pairing. Henry is pretty chill about everything once he understands. Gerald is a sweetheart and very understanding and patient with Henry and what he needs to process all this new information. The great news is he doesn’t freak out. He takes in all Gerald tells him and adjusts pretty easily to have a lifetime partner and friend group within the paranormal world. His mom is adorable in her care of Henry. The local authorities are “in the know” also and help the vamps and Henry with their little problem of Henry’s uncle. If you’re a fan of this series, I think you’ll enjoy this addition to this universe and seeing another paranormal find his beloved fated mate.
