Bail bondsman Jesse Sparks hasn’t had an easy ride. He barely survived life-shattering allegations levied against his integrity that blew up his career as an arson investigator, and a divorce that left him afraid of commitment. Now, he faces more life-changing events—his secret, and surprising, attraction to Ryan, the handsome bond recovery agent who works for him, and the arrival of his estranged seventeen-year-old genius son who wants to move to Las Vegas to attend grad school and insists on living with him.
Ryan Montgomery has had the hots for his boss since the day he started working for the man. One day, his very private boss admits his teen son is coming to live with him in Las Vegas and he hasn’t seen the boy since he was five, and Jesse has no idea how to deal with the young man. Getting to know Jesse on a personal level stokes Ryan’s own burning desire for the man—the man he believes is straight, so he can never call him his own.
As if hunting down criminals who try to avoid being tried for their crimes isn’t dangerous enough, someone from Jesse’s past comes seeking revenge. Can the threat be neutralized before someone close to Jesse becomes collateral damage?
REVIEW:
Yay! Sam has released her new Lonely Heroes spin-off series and it is great!
Jesse is content with his life. He maybe questioning why he has this attraction to his second-in-command, Monty, but he just keeps it buried where it should be and goes on with his work, which is his life basically. All that turns topsy-turvy when his ex-wife announces that their 17 year old son is moving to Las Vegas to attend graduate school (yep Hardy is a certified genius) and is going to live with his dear old dad. He then unloads on Monty “He’s seventeen. Needs to live with a guardian, and I’m not the guy. I haven’t seen him since he was five. He’s gone through grade, middle, and high school, along with college in twelve years. He’s a goddamn genius, and I’m a fucking former civil servant and not a very respected one at that. He’s one of those tech wizards, and I think he’s better off if he doesn’t know what a fucking idiot his father really is.” So, with Monty’s help (after the initial shock that Jesse had been previously married and has an almost grown son!), Jesse is preparing for his son’s arrival. An arrival that his wife mistakenly told him the wrong day! But with all this constant close contact Jesse can no longer control his deep feelings for the big ex-marine. And even though Monty/Ryan is openly gay is will Jesse be his type or even interested in him or a relationship?
I will admit that I was pretty distraught when my Lonely Heroes series came to an end. But I was thankful that Sam introduced Jesse “Sparky” Sparks and Ryan “Monty” Montgomery in the final book where Rafe and Dallas got their hard earned HEA. I felt like I kinda knew them and it helped transition me to this new spin-off series. And getting to see Rafe and Dallas when Jesse and Ryan went out for their special celebration dinner, with all the Sparks Bail Bonds crew, to help them celebrate at Rafe’s Cucina della Nonna at the Intercontinental Hotel and Casino, that was a special treat.
These two really worked and are going to be a great backbone for this series. They are going to be super supportive of each other and a great parental guide for Hardy to have. They may have taken their time to finally acknowledge their feeling but there is no sitting around after they got them out in the open. They are full steam ahead and no looking back or regrets…only a bright future in front of them and they aren’t going to waste a moment of it!
I can’t wait to have Fitz, from Gabby and GEA-A, join the team. I am wondering why he is moving and leaving them but hopefully will have many of my favorites come to visit him. Vegas is always a fun place to meet back up at and have fun doing it.
I am thinking that the accusations leveled at Jesse, in Florida years ago and ended his career, are going to be an underlying problem that they will continue search for the answers why someone set him up in this new series. Having Hardy working hard on clearing his dad I just know we will one day have the answer. I just hope it doesn’t put them in another psycho’s line of fire in the process. But I’m sure that is stupid wishful thinking. Something big is behind this and he was just the fall guy.
I don’t do this often but I have to recommend that you also download the absolutely perfect free bonus scene that is offered at the end of the book of this new spin-off series. It really was the perfect epilogue for me. Not that I think we are done with Jesse and Ryan’s story at all. But it sure made me smile and warm my heart. So sweet 💕
