There are so many times when I sit at my computer wondering what I’m going to write. It isn’t so much writer’s block as it is waiting for an idea to flow. And it’s inevitably at one of those points in the story that will determine the direction of the entire novel going forward. Alot of the time these decision points are mapped out before I start, but every now and then, the story will take a turn I don’t expect and suddenly we are in uncharted territory.
Usually at moments like these, I try to power on, making the best decision I can, but often after a page or two, I regret my decision, return to the decision point, and change my mind, taking the story down the path I had originally dismissed. Almost every time, the story is better and I’m alot happier with the outcome. But I would never have arrived there if I hadn’t made the wrong turn first.
So when you’re writing, don’t be afraid to pick a direction, sometimes you get it right the first time, and other times, you set the stage for a redirection that’s even better.

Blurb/Synopsis:
It took a family loss to draw artist Leddy Finster away from his retreat in the woods of rural Wisconsin back to the family home in Carlisle. Originally intending to help clean out his father’s condo and return to the peace and quiet his work requires, he doesn’t expect old feelings for his brother’s best friend to bloom again after all this time. Nor could he ever have expected his father’s obsession with shoes… lots of shoes.
Professional hockey player Johan Weiss spends his summers in Carlisle, where he grew up. As a favor, he agrees to help Leddy clean out his father’s condo and get it ready to be sold. Working together, they list the hundreds of pairs of shoes for sale, getting reacquainted while their mutual teenage crushes renew into full-on attraction that they each try to resist.
Johan’s life is busy between his home in Carlisle and his place in Philadelphia with the hockey team, while Leddy believes he needs quiet and solitude to work at his best. Their needs seem incompatible with each other, but Johan demonstrates that he’s able to make room for Leddy as well as provide inspiration Leddy never expected. All Leddy has to do is decide if home is the woods or where his heart is.

“Jesus,” Johan said as he gaped at a wall of shoe boxes. He went over and pulled one out at random. “Holy cow, are they all in the original boxes? They’re two rows deep.” He slipped the box back, surveying the sides of the boxes with Nike, Sperry, Converse, New Balance, and more all clearly visible.
Leddy pulled a box out of its place, smiling that wicked grin that Johan knew he was thinking something dirty.
“Okay, what is it?”
“These… the gayest shoes ever.” Those deep brown eyes sparkled with mirth for a few seconds as he shook the box slightly.
“How so?” Johan knew that Leddy had come out of the closet a few years ago. It had been a shock for Aaron, who apparently decided that Johan had all the answers and that he could somehow bend Johan to his way of thinking on the issue. That had led to a discussion of their own and had resulted in a come-to-Jesus moment for Aaron, because Johan wasn’t about to condone any kind of weirdness on Aaron’s part.
“A-did-ass,” he drolled, shaking his behind slightly, which sent a jolt of desire through Johan that took him by complete surprise. “And don’t get me started on Dockers.” He pulled out another box, holding both of them as Johan tried to keep a straight face and failed.
“Jesus,” he chuckled as Leddy slipped them back in place and selected another box.
“Let’s not forget about Pumas.” He leaned slightly closer. “Rrrroooarrr.” He rolled those Rs so seductively and managed to turn the last one slightly sibilant. Not that Johan noticed for a second. His mind was still back on the slight wiggle of Leddy’s small, tight, perfect butt.
