BISHOP SULLIVAN
I’ve always known what my future had in store: inheriting the family ranch and having myself a wife and kids to carry on the Sullivan name. Porter Dixon never factored into those plans. We may have spent our teenage years sneaking away to lose ourselves in each other, but he always held me at arm’s length…until the day he up and left without so much as a goodbye.
PORTER DIXON
After everything I’ve lost in my life, it’s important that I keep myself tightly guarded. Especially around Bishop Sullivan. Dad would be rolling in his grave if he found out I was shacking up with a Sullivan, given the bad blood between our families. But eleven years after leaving, I’m back in Laurel Springs with something to prove: I don’t need the Sullivans, nor their land.
Except, damn it all, Bishop has this way of burrowing under my armor. The magnetic draw between us is still too hard to ignore, and what starts out as boss and ranch hand quickly turns into stolen moments and simmering encounters that make it hard to stay angry.
I want to think that love can conquer all and tame my wild heart…but the past isn’t so easy to forget.
REVIEW:
I love this book! I love the angst, I love Sully and Porter, and how despite what Porter went through, his love for Sully was the constant and I think the anchor that kept him grounded (even if at the time his hatred is what fuels him to go through his life).
Bishop Sullivan and Porter Dixon grew up together in Sullivan Ranch, but their families hold a secret that could destroy both of them if ever it is known. When Porter’s mother died, he wanted to be with Sully/Bishop but what he saw when he went to Sully’s house drove him away instead. He hasn’t been back since then, until now. He has had numerous jobs but nothing that stick, either he moves or he gets fired (which was often). This is his last resort, he is back to the one place he never wanted to return to.
Bishop never knew the reason Porter left all those years ago. He thought they had something special, he loved/still loves Porter even after all these years. When Porter came back to apply for a job, he was speechless, he realized that here is his second chance, if Porter gives him a chance, that is.
What happened between their families have been there for so long that when finally the truth comes out, it will turn all their heads.
In the meantime, (even if Porter was reluctant at first) they are getting to know each other again and Porter learned that Sully divorced his wife after two years because he ever only loved one person and his wife knew and understood it. Porter is known for his affinity with horses, he can connect with them and in turn calm them enough so that they can be ridden. He is good at his job and works hard. His being ornery is due to the fact that he really has only one place he can call home and that is with Sully, and he hates himself for thinking that way, so he denies it to himself.
Sully is a good son, he has done his best for their ranch making his father and mother proud of him. He feels that he needs to make up for the loss of his sister all those years ago. He has never came out, maybe because he didn’t have a reason to, until now, Porter is back.
As they navigate their rekindled relationship, the past gets in the way, it will always get in the way until they resolve it, somehow, someway. The truth found its way out, from the person who has been fueled by jealousy and insecurities. The person Porter sees as someone like his father, a drunk.
This book is beautiful and the angst level is just perfect. Bishop/Sully and Porter are meant to be, no matter the distance, when Porter left, they have always thought of each other all these years.
Congratulations Ms. Riley Hart and Ms. Christina Lee, another bestseller for sure!
