Detective Gary Mitchell and psychic Dan Porter have a new cold case to tackle, and new leads to research in the hunt for Gary’s brother’s killer. Their life in Boston has settled into a comfortable rhythm.
But when forensic discoveries in a recent robbery gone wrong share similarities with their three-year-old cold case, all they can do is follow the evidence—and Dan’s gift—which leads them in an unexpected direction, way out of their comfort zone.
Gary and Dan find themselves in a shadowy world where they can trust no one, with unseen opponents who want them to back away from their investigation—and suddenly they’re in a race they have to win.
Because if they don’t, the consequences could be more far-reaching than they could possibly imagine…
REVIEW:
First off, my usual disclaimer – you must read this series in order, as the books build on each other. These types of procedurals have become a favorite of mine. With this one, we get another level of intrigue. While investigating more clues surrounding Gary’s brothers killing, a case drops in their laps that has global consequences.
Once again KC has stepped up her game with this one. The worldbuilding is so intense in this book. Can I just say my geeky nerd flag got to fly proudly while reading this book. I mean who can make RNA, DNA, genomes, and gene sequencing so exciting. Not to mention our fearless duo fly off to Africa to try and help save the world.
The character development continues to be brilliantly constructed. The killer of Gary’s brother is taking shape, and I just can’t wait to have that nugget of information revealed. We also get to meet several new side characters. From Gary’s family to the team formed to bring down the bioterrorists. K.C. brings a new level and depth to the main characters of Dan and Gary, as well. We get to see their relationship grow and their lives become more intwined with each other.
The prose… let me just say right up front, there is a lot of information to absorb and the research that was done was over the top. My nerdy self just loved how the words flowed with this story. I just couldn’t put it down. There are so many plot twists, I almost couldn’t keep up with them. The integration of a separate case, while still incorporating the longer story arc of Gary’s brothers’ killer takes nothing away from the story, in fact I think it enhances the story as we get to see how law enforcement groups juggle more than one type of case at a time. There are also some well-placed sexy times, which I always appreciate. Characters don’t always need to be physically intimate, to create a high level of intimacy and romance.
With all of that being said, I highly recommend this story and series. If you want to know if Dan and Gary save the world? If they find out who killed Gary’s brother? You will need to run to your favorite eBook purchasing site and grab this book up. Because as usual, I’m not going to reveal any of that information to you. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next. Just a brilliant read.
