Out of the Cage: Spotting a number of fishy things in his town, a deputy is ready when finally facing the paranormal.
Nathan Kaldwell has been a deputy in the town of Stone Ridge for many years. In that time, he’s noticed a few peculiarities in many of the town’s occupants. Since the occupants’ oddities never seem to pose a danger to anyone, Nathan keeps the information to himself. When a motorcycle gang comes to town, being a bike enthusiast, he stops to admire their rides.
To Nathan’s surprise, what he thinks is a large gray dog in a sidecar turns out to be a wolf. A shocking series of events reveals that the wolf is also a man named Khan, a paranormal creature called a shifter. While Nathan’s attracted to the pretty man, he spots the tell-tale signs of a wounded and abused soul. He’s not certain if even what the shifters call the mate-pull can convince the skittish Khan to stay in human form for him.
When Nathan learns there’s shifter hunters in the area, can he keep Khan safe in either form?
REVIEW:
Note: While this is number 62 in this series it can be read as a stand alone. There is crossover here with the Kontra’s Menagerie series.
Deputy Nathan Kaldwell is the last human in the Stone Ridge Sherriff’s department – although he doesn’t know that yet 😉 When Kontra Belikov’s pack comes into town on their motorcycles, Nathan spots what he thinks is a dog with them but immediately realizes it’s a wolf. And having wolves requires a permit. The wolf in question is super friendly to him – like overly friendly 😉 The guy Sam, whose wolf Nathan assume Khan is calls Kontra who is with the Sherriff to confirm that the “paperwork is in order” 😀
Khan can’t believe he’s met his mate! But he’s more than a little skittish. Having been abused and sold by his old pack, put under spells by witches and not confessed that he is now able to shift back into his human form, well he’s afraid. His wolf wants Nathan badly, but he’s terrified. When he is finally ready to meet his mate and he shifts to human form, he’s doing sort of OK until he hears about the hunters and that sets him off again.
Nathan has realized that there are shifters in the woods around Stone Ridge. But he’s kept that knowledge to himself until he’s sent on a bogus errand and ends up with Kontra’s group where he is worried that they are up to no good. Turns out they are all on the same side. Nathan needs answers though so he goes straight to the top! Khan needs reassurance and Nathan wants to be the one to give it to him – as well as everything else the scared shifter needs and desires 😉
Khan is a sweet little wolf who has suffered abuse. Nathan is a strong and capable deputy who knows there are “oddities” in the town of Stone Ridge 🙂 He takes the existence of the paranormal pretty well – with a few drinks 😉 Poor Khan is just terrified because of what he’s been through and it’s up to Nathan to reassure him that he won’t let anything happen to him. Declan McIntire, alpha of the Stone Ridge pack is there to help soothe the poor terrified shifter as well. The fated mates are able to work things out and Khan’s inexperience isn’t an issue. This is another nice quick read in this series with a fun crossover and the ever hilarious and in your face Payson keeps things interesting 😉 Fans of the series will enjoy this new episode.
