BLURB:
George Lester, the Duke of Northumberland, flees familial expectations in Britain for the promise of freedom of San Francisco, looking for the chance to be himself. But before he even gets close, a blizzard forces him off the road, and he finds himself freezing half to death in a small town with no motel… with a litter of puppies to look after.
Luckily for George, he also finds Alan.
As the heir to his family’s ranch, Alan Justice knows the burden of being the oldest son. He doesn’t have time to show George, the stranger his brother dragged home, what it takes to be a cowboy. But that very night, George surprises him by helping a mare in distress through a difficult birth. Maybe the duke is made of sterner stuff than Alan thought.
George and Alan keep surprising each other, and every day they grow a little closer. But when George’s responsibilities call him home, Alan finds he’s the one who has something to prove—that he can handle what it means to be the duke’s cowboy.
REVIEW:
George is taking a short break from the title and duties he never wanted. He knows eventually he will have to go home but giving up your hopes and dreams isn’t easy. Maybe if he can have one small adventure in America, he can go back and put his dreams to rest.
Alan knows all about losing your dreams. The death of his father was the end of everything he’d been hoping his life would be. He loves his family and his heritage but it’s left him feeling trapped and alone.
Andrew Grey is really good at writing empathetic characters. The chemistry between George and Alan is palpable and very sweet and snarky at the same time, and that’s my favorite kind of chemistry! Some good banter and better sex is always welcome, especially when the sex is sweet and steamy without taking over the whole book. Some stories don’t need a magic D to to fix everything!
Alan’s mom and brother are the kind of family everyone needs while George’s mother needs a little work.
There’s a little angst brought in from the outside but most of comes from the men themselves and the pain they are suffering through and the stuggles they are going through to have a life that’s as meaningful to them as it is the everyone who depends on them.
I enjoyed this book and it was a pretty good story, although there’s nothing surprising about it. If you are looking for a dependable read with characters you can relate to, that’s going to leave you feeling good then this is the book for you. There’s something to be said for knowing that you will be left smiling when the story is over, especially when you’re feeling a little down.
I am looking forward to the next book and will save it for a rainy day when I need something to round out my afternoon snuggled under a blanket with a glass of wine.
