REVIEW:
Promises of Forever is a wonderful second chance at love novel between two men in their forties who are opposites in nearly every way. I enjoyed reading about middle aged men but also relished the interspersed chapters set in the past when Koa and Jersey initially met at summer camp. Angsty times. I adored the time spent “in the log” each summer at camp…you’ll know what I mean when you read it.
Promises of Forever marks a return to mental illness exploration that Nicky is well known for. This book is philosophical but not so much that it will scare away readers *cough me cough* who struggle comprehending existentialism and Koa’s fatalistic views.
The growth of the characters throughout their lives is extensive. Jersey and Koa are highly sympathetic characters whom you will root for from the moment they meet in camp. The angst kicks into high gear when they reunite in their forties. Jersey is so persistent in connecting with Koa again, even when Koa expresses indifference toward his former friend. “Jersey had packed his bags and moved into my mind without invitation or notice. Worse, the unwanted guest didn’t seem to plan on leaving until I took action.”
Koa lives as a shell of a man, loving his career as a professor with just one friend, but not much else. He’s closed off and distant and won’t let himself experience any pleasure. Jersey is still feeling the loss of his career as a professional hockey player and other profound losses in his personal life.
Other than the rich characterization, my favorite aspect of the book is its often poetic nature. The sublime writing felt literary at times. And you can look forward to a lovely epilogue.
I recommend this book to all of Nicky’s fans. I feel it’s unique from her past books and truly enjoyable.
