Books are expensive here in New Zealand. Even buying online from overseas, once you factor in postage, you’re not saving much. A $4.99 ebook with the exchange rate is almost $8NZ, and a paperback that is $13US costs me double that at least, often more.
In pricing my books I’m trying to walk the fine line between making them affordable without sending the message that my hours of work are worth next to nothing.
With the new year, and the trend in book pricing, I’ve decided I need to raise my prices to better match what’s out there, so my ebooks will be pricing $1 more. Novels will rise to 5.99, and novellas 4.99. I tend to write long so my novels as usually around the 70K mark. I won’t be changing them all at once, so when I have a book on sale, it will go up to the new price once that sale is finished.
I’m not doing this lightly, but also need to at least cover my publishing expenses.
At this point I’m keeping them in KU, but that might change depending on how much they’re being read in there. The return isn’t great, but it’s still income I wouldn’t otherwise have and at this point a good portion of royalties, and it makes them accessible to readers who might not otherwise be able to afford them.
It’s been just over four years since I first self-published, and this business is very much a constant learning curve. Do I regret going indie and doing it all myself? Not in the slightest.
The community is fabulous. If I have questions, someone out there has the answer, and will support me through it.
Speaking of communities rallying around…

Music speaks directly to the heart.
Joel is a music teacher who knows it’s time to forget his ex and move on, while Marcus runs a lawn-mowing business and has come to Wellington to escape the reminders of a recent breakup. Although they’re opposites, when Joel and Marcus connect, their romance has the potential to hit all the right notes.
Too bad neither of them feels ready for new love.
With family and friends in common, dating is risky and things could get messy if it doesn’t work out. When the sweet song of possibility draws them towards romance, a Chopin prelude ends in a seductive kiss. But it will take some practice and perseverance to find their perfect harmony…
Author’s note: This is the second edition of Prelude to Love. The first edition was released by another publishing house. This edition has some added content, and has been revised and re-edited with the end result being a better, stronger story. It uses New Zealand spelling to reflect its setting.
Meantime I’d love to see some of you in my readers group and/or signing up for my newsletter. Elizabeth Noble and I also have a Facebook group for our paranormal shared world, The Sleepless City.
