When you know, you know . . .
And Drew knows. He knows he likes men—Holden in particular. He knows he’ll have to make the first move. And when he and Holden are together, Drew knows nothing has ever been more right. The problem is that Holden doesn’t know it too.
Holden knows he isn’t good enough for Drew—an ex-con is never a good bet–but that doesn’t stop him from wanting him. He craves Drew more than he wants to breathe, and that’s the problem. Between his dubious past and all the complicated family issues, Holden is afraid of hurting Drew. And that’s the one thing he never wants to do.
When two strong souls collide, the stars align and something right is born. But can love survive the storms, or will something right turn into what could have been?
REVIEW:
Drew’s had a hard life, only made bearable by the love of his siblings, especially his older sister Lexi. He’s known he’s head over heels for Holden, Lexi’s soon-to-be brother-in-law for a long time. Now he just has to figure out how to get Holden to see him.
Holden, however already see’s Drew all to clearly. He keeps calling him a kid, hoping to box Drew away in that box in his head, because if he doesn’t, he’s not sure what’s going to happen.
I liked this story, how it didn’t rush along. The author does a great job of showing us what decent (if flawed) human beings these two young men are and why we should be cheering for them.
I really enjoyed Drew’s relationship with his siblings. I liked how they counted on each other, even when they were driving each other crazy. Reminds me of my own crazy family.
Holden’s struggle is a little more difficult. He’s not only fighting for his own place in the world after making some mistakes, he’s also fight to convince himself that he’s worthy of Drew. That’s probably the hardest battle of all.
I loved how they both brought out the best in each other. I know you have to better yourself for you, but it doesn’t hurt to be inspired by someone you care about.
I don’t like Holden’s dad and while he’s not a monster, he never becomes likable for me, but I guess we need our “bad guys” too. Or at least people who are plot devices and who help the story move on.
It’s not a perfect story. It lagged at the beginning and I had a hard time getting into it, but once I did I enjoyed it. I would have liked to have seen the guys interact a little more with people other than each other, just so we can get a better glimpse into their characters.
However, it is a complete story and there were no loose endings that were left dangling. The writing style is good, solid and I was impressed with the authors skill at writing banter. It’s not always easy to pull off and have it not feel forced.
This is my first book by Shaniel Watson so I think I will go and see what else I can find by this author. There’s a first book in this series that I feel like I should take a look at. I’m curious to see what other tropes they write because this one definitely has promise.
I have no problem giving this one a solid 4 out of 5.
