Welcome JT 🙂
Two different townships. Two different packs.
Mark is the even-tempered pack leader for the territory surrounding Riverton, the sleepy cousin of Creekside Township. He’s been the leader for over 25 years. The pack is his life. He is a legacy leader, taking over after his sire decided he needed to retire.
During a trip into Riverton for supplies, Mark comes to the rescue of a young Omega male named Reese who is struggling to simply get home to Creekside after a shopping trip.
Reese grew up in Creekside, raising his brother, Harlan from the time Harlan was sixteen. Recently, Reese has suffered through a series of losses that have left him depressed and lonely.
He knows he shouldn’t have been out in his old car with snow in the forecast. But he has a reason for wanting organic berries and farm eggs he can only find in Riverton.
While giving Reese a ride home, Mark makes a startling discovery. How he chooses to proceed will affect both of their lives. But will sacrifices need to be made?
I waited to see if Reese was going to burst into tears. I wanted to be there to hold him if he did. I inhaled his scent. I’d had a dream where he had let me embrace him again.
I came close to shaking my head to dislodge the thought.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” I said as I headed for the door. I was startled by Reese’s hand on my shoulder, stopping me. I turned to face him. “Did I forget something?”
Reese gave me the saddest look, tears on his cheeks, and flung his arms around my shoulders. I reciprocated, wrapping my arms around him and hugging him tight.
The strength of his arms around me felt good.
“Seriously, Mark,” he whispered in my ear. “Thank you.”
“I’m here for you,” I whispered back.
He pulled away and stepped back, sniffling. “Sorry … just needed to hug you.”
“Anytime.” And I meant it. Those strong arms around me had stirred something deep inside me I’d never experienced before. A feeling of completeness.
The whole drive home, I kept bringing myself to the moment I had felt as if I had unlocked something. I gripped the steering wheel. Reese had unlocked something.
I was reminded the next morning when I showed up at his house and he was waiting on his porch for me again—coffee in hand. A ripple of profound affection nearly floored me.
He flashed me a smile that lit up his eyes as I mounted the steps.
“Good morning,” he said and handed me my cup. It was the same cup I had used yesterday. It had a corny live love slogan on it. He had washed it for me.
“It is. It’s going to be a good day.”
“Floor?”
“Yeah, I haven’t tiled in a long time, but I should be fine.”
He left me at the door to the carport. “Holler if you need any help.”
It was slow going. I was glad I’d given myself an entire day to tile. Some of the cuts near the doorway were fidgety. After a short break, I grouted the floor. It was the final step for today.
I washed my hands and tools in the kitchen sink. I’d install the laundry sink next weekend before painting the bathroom.
I found Reese in the living room; sound asleep on the sofa. He was cupping his belly as he slept. He was going to make a good carer of the pup. The thought brought out an instinct in me. I wanted to protect Reese and his pup. Beyond what I should be feeling.
I pulled a blanket over him, covered his shoulders, and added another log to the fire. His face bathed in the firelight had a warm glow. It softened his features.
He looked so serene.
I couldn’t stop myself. I brushed some of the hair hanging onto his cheek away. His eyes fluttered open, and he smiled at me, sleep still keeping a soft hold on him.
“Hey,” he whispered.
“Hey.”
There was a silent exchange between us. My stomach fluttered, disturbing my breath. I couldn’t pull my gaze away. As he looked up at me, his lips parted, I realized he felt it too.
It was time for me to go.
