Money cannot buy happiness, something Robin Flint may have to learn the hard way.
Long distance relationships are hard, even more so when one of the couple is a future viscount, billionaire, and potential prize for every gold digger on the East Coast. When Robin takes a temporary assignment in New York, leaving Simon, his boyfriend of nearly a year, back in the UK, they have to work to keep their relationship on track. Life gets even more complicated when Robin’s ex, movie star Dorian Marsten, comes out as gay and Simon is targeted by one of Dorian’s fans thinking Dorian and Robin were meant to be together.
This is a companion story to the events in Coming Out at Crofton Hall from Robin and Simon’s point of view. It is recommended to read this story after Coming Out at Crofton Hall, but it can also be read after Starting Again at Crofton Hall due to the overlapping story timelines.
REVIEW:
NOTE: This is the seventh book that takes in the Modern Crofton series and the story runs parallel to Coming Out at Crofton Hall and builds on the previous title Starting Again at Crofton Hall where Robin and Simon become a couple. It is recommended to at least have read Starting Again before reading this book.
Simon and Robin have been together for a while when Robin has an opportunity to go to Manhattan to train at his father’s company there. As the future viscount, this is a good idea. Florence, his sister is there and can show him the ropes as it were. Simon is exactly thrilled about them being apart for six months as it’s already difficult enough with their schedules to find time together. This is too good to pass up though, so they agree to this for the six months.
While in Manhattan, Robin is introduced to an Italian model, Marco, who is all about fun. Florence warns Robin, but he needs some friends his own age and he’s been in the closet for years with Dorian, his ex who is a movie star, so he’s happy to enjoy his time. What he doesn’t count on is Marco flashing them all over social media. He also doesn’t count on Dorian finally coming out.
With Dorian’s coming out, well there is renewed interested in Robin who was he old PA/secret boyfriend. Between that and the Marco situation and the distance, well let’s just say things don’t go very smoothly for Robin and Simon doing the long distance thing.
Simon is injured and has lots of time on his hands as he’s recuperating. This leads to lots of time to ruminate on what might be going on with Robin. Luckily he’s spending time at Crofton Hall and he’s happy to help out Ashley with his and Ben’s baby Davey. Ashley needs a break and Simon needs something to focus on.
Simon is left with a lot of doubts as he’s had a bad breakup and a gaslighting ex that really hurt him. He’s not sure that he and Robin really belong together. Luckily he’s got support from Robin’s family. It takes Robin a while to figure out that maybe he’s not handled things the best way possible. He’s really actually new to an honest relationship as well, sot hey are both kind of feeling their way along thanks to the baggage of their pasts.
I really really enjoy this series! I was a bit thrown off by the stuff in NYC. I guess not being privy to that rarefied world of the ultrarich gave me some pause. I’ve no doubt it’s accurate. It’s not just something I’ve spent any time thinking about. Simon still has some issues with his past relationship eroding his self-confidence and self-worth. His relationship with Ashley who in many ways is in a similar position – someone who is a regular guy paired with someone who is in a different social class – is a real godsend. Robin just doesn’t think sometimes about the consequences which seems slightly out of character since he spent years playing a part with Dorian. He still has a lot of growing to do. Luckily Simon is a pretty patient guy 🙂 Love this series and am happy that we will be getting more books set in this world. Recommended.
