Lately my straight best friend has been very… handsy, which is killing me because I’ve been in love with the idiot for years.
I love my best friend, I always have, but I never wanted him to realize just how much. He’s never seemed to notice before, but since he broke up with his girlfriend, he’s been really clingy. Like way more than I’ve ever seen.
I love it. And it’s killing me.
What I really want is all those cuddles and sweet touches to mean more than they do. I have to keep reminding my heart that everything Haiden is doing is platonic, even if it feels like it isn’t. Unfortunately for me, my stupid heart doesn’t stop hoping for more.
REVIEW:
I really love these companion books where the secondary characters within the main series get their own opportunity to shine and I get to find out more about them.
Haiden and Logan were both youngsters when they were first introduced into the series. Logan is a Magi and was saved by Mads and Jude when his squad tried to kill him. Haiden was also, along with his siblings, rescued by Mads and Cos from the Red Hand stadium plot.
Being two teenagers, they naturally gravitated to each other and quickly became best friends and spend a lot of time together, playing games, hanging out, all the normal teenage activities. Logan has had a crush on Haiden for a few years but is frightened to rock the boat and lose his best friend. Haiden is oblivious, and views Logan as his best friends. This status quo starts to change when they find themselves stranded in the People’s Liberation Union after the last attempt to get Magi and Shifters to safety goes terribly wrong, with half of the pack in the People’s Liberation Union and half the pack is stuck in the USA. With mates separated and no-one knowing when they will all be reunited.
When Logan is cornered by some shifters and Haiden comes to his rescue, then Haiden starts to realize that Logan means more to him than just best friends. Logan has been battling his feelings for Haiden for years and as Haiden becomes more touchy feely, he doesn’t know what it all means and thinks it might just be normal shifter behaviour.
They are both so sweet trying to figure out what they are feeling and what it means for their friendship. Despite everything they have both gone through over the past few years they are still teenagers trying to figure out the world and how they fit in it.
My favourite bit of the book is Haiden asking Logan out on a date, but Logan doesn’t realise it’s a date. It’s sweet, funny and had me shouting at the book just talk to each other. It takes a little time but eventually they are both on the same page and start dating. It’s not all sunshine and roses but they both love each other and persevere in the face of adversity and surprisingly some push back from the pack, who feel they are moving too fast. They are not deterred because they know that life can change in an instant and they want to make the most of their time together.
A great companion book to the main series, a lovely romance between two young men who have suffered so much, so young, but who finally find happiness together.
