Ten random facts about UGLY BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE.
- The book is multi-POV. In fact, the book has five points of view.
Having this novel be multi-POV was just the best way to tell the story. Audrey uncovering the truth about what happened to her friend Ivy (who is presumed to have committed suicide) is the crux and driving force behind a lot of the book. But having other POV chapters (Marcia, Cassandra, Marcia’s son Ben, and Ivy) really opens up more. Ultimately, UGLY BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE is meant to be an ensemble story.
- This book idea has been in my head for around twenty years.
Yup, that’s right. That isn’t a misprint. I’ve had the idea for this book in my head for almost two decades. Sure. The story has changed a little over the years. But the “thesis” hasn’t. It’s about flawed people who live in this glamorous town.
- The book is set in the fictional town of Crescent Hills.
Being a small town doesn’t mean Crescent Hills is any less affluent. It’s not. McMansions, designer clothes, and fancy cars populate Crescent Hills. Because appearances are everything in a town like Crescent Hills.
- Audrey was originally named, “Alex.”
Yup, once upon a time, Audrey had a different name. At the end of the day “Audrey” felt like more of a unique name.
- Three out of the five point of view characters are bisexual.
Marcia, Cassandra, and Marcia’s son Ben are all bisexual. I wanted to organically write a story that reflects the diverse world we live in.
- Chapter Five is a big one.
I can’t tell you what happens in Chapter Five other than the chapter is Ivy’s POV chapter. But by the end of Chapter Five, the reader becomes aware of something that the majority of characters aren’t aware of. And the dramatic irony just adds another layer to the story. Although I can promise you that everything will be out in the open by the end of the book.
- Secret relationships are a big part of the book.
That’s right. The above statement was meant to be pluralized. There’s more than one shocking relationship in the book.
- Flashbacks are included.
As the saying goes, “what’s past is prologue.” And the past is very important to the plot of UGLY BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE. Just like in real life how you don’t always know everything about someone you just meet, the same can also be said about some of the characters in the book. And that’s part of the fun. You never know when a bombshell is going to be dropped.
- The series is intended to be a trilogy at a minimum.
That’s right. I have plans for a Book 2 and a Book 3. Book 2 is tentatively titled UGLY BEAUTIFUL SECRETS while Book 3 is tentatively tilted UGLY BEAUTIFUL TRAGEDY. And I could always develop more ideas after that. You just never know what might happen.
- All of the characters bring something to the table.
Audrey represents pureness and innocence with wanting to discover the truth about what happened to Ivy. Marcia represents someone who has remained in a loveless marriage for the sake of her son (Ben). Ben is a college student just trying to find his way in this world and navigate his first same sex relationship. Meanwhile, Cassandra represents those who seemingly have everything yet get a metaphorical grenade dropped into their lap, which threatens to unravel everything she thought she had. And finally, Ivy represents those of us who’ve become damaged and lost along the way.

Birds screeched when Audrey opened her eyes. She yawned, then stretched. Her back hairs stuck up. Audrey might’ve been lying on the seating of the pontoon boat, but black no longer veiled the sky. Instead, sunlight beamed from the cloudless sky.
Audrey scanned the boat. Ivy was gone.
Dread filled Audrey’s insides—she couldn’t think of one logical explanation as to why Ivy would no longer be on the boat. Audrey did the only thing she could and leaned up against the edge of the boat and peered into the water. No sign of Ivy.
Something vibrated from her jean’s right pocket and she whipped out her iPhone. Sawyer was calling her. “Hello?” Audrey asked.
“I wanted to see how you were doing this morning.” Sawyer chuckled. “And don’t worry. I’m not mad you decided to have a fun night with Ivy. Just glad Ivy texted me about you staying over at her place. Most people wouldn’t be so courteous.”
“I’m still on the boat,” Audrey blurted. “And Ivy is nowhere to be found.”
“Come again?”
“We never went back to shore and had dinner.”
“How much did you drink last night?”
“Just one gin and tonic.”
A folded piece of paper on the driver’s seat of the boat caught Audrey’s attention, and she rushed over to it. “I’m sorry, but I’ve gotta go,” she said. “I’ll be home as soon as I can.”
Audrey pressed END before shoving her iPhone back into her pocket. Then, she unfolded the note and read it.
Dear Audrey,
I’m so sorry to have to tell you this, but I’ve been very unhappy
with my life for a long time, and I’ve decided to end my life.
I know my suicide will probably come as a shock to you. However,
please always think of me fondly.

Ivy
Audrey crumbled the note and it fell onto the floor of the boat. After that, she screamed. Tragedies were supposed to be something that she watched on the news, not witnessed first- hand. But no explanation was necessary about how cruel life was and the universe often had a twisted sense of humor.
Tears welled in Audrey’s eyes. Nothing could’ve prepared her for this moment, because she wanted to cry. And cry. And cry. Ivy couldn’t be dead; she was only thirty-seven. So, she still had a little more than half her life left.
Ivy was in trouble and Audrey hadn’t seen the signs. So,
Audrey’d never forgive herself for Ivy’s suicide. Audrey had failed Ivy, and she couldn’t fathom how she’d continue with life.
Audrey’s throat tightened. Perhaps Ivy’s death was only meant to resemble a suicide and was really murder. There was a reason people always touted the saying about life being stranger than fiction. Audrey shook her head. Yeah, that had to have been it. Ivy couldn’t have been desperate enough to commit suicide.
The only thing Audrey was certain of was that Ivy was nowhere to be found. And that was why she’d get to the bottom of Ivy’s death. Whether someone murdered Ivy or Ivy actually committed suicide, there had to be more to the story.
