You sure I couldn’t just persuade you to let me go? I mean, this isn’t exactly my scene. I’ll never be back here, and you can continue to do — whatever it is you do out here without having a whole company after you.”
He studies me for a moment. “Nice try, I’ve tortured enough assassins in my day to know that your ‘company’ doesn’t give a toss about you. Of course, they may send someone else if the other Lords push hard enough.”
I knew he was smart, but the fact he already knows who put the hit out on him is quite impressive. I hide that though and counter, “Well, what do you have in store for me today then?” I gesture towards the wall of torture with my chin.
He turns his head to the wall and then back to me. “You really aren’t scared, are you?” he says, with some admiration in his voice.
“Do I have a reason to be?”
“You know I could not just kill you; I could make you suffer more than any man should in 1000 lifetimes?”
“We all have to go some time, right? Besides, that rogering you gave me last night wasn’t exactly hell for me. Although, I would have preferred you bought me a drink first.”
He steps up to me and runs his hand down my chin and then to my chest. He stares me in the eyes intently, those fiery red orbs piercing me. His eyes are drawn to the wound on my neck that I’m sure he himself inflicted. He licks his finger and dabs at the cut before placing the finger back in his mouth. I swear I see the eyes roll into the back of his head for a second before he returns to me.
“Tell you what,” he says. “You’re the first doomed man to not completely repulse me with his begging and crying. Sure, it makes me hard, but it’s hardly entertaining for too long. As much as I would enjoy breaking you down piece by piece, I think I have a better idea.”
“Oh, and what might that be?”
He pulls on the strap on my right wrist, and it opens; he does the same for each of them until I am standing there, a free man, in front of him.
“Come along, I want to show you something,” he says.
“And what if I bash your head in with a candlestick as you lead the way?”
“You’re very welcome to try. Just do remember that wall if you get the urge to do anything foolish.”
I look at the wall of torture and despair and think to myself that I have probably dodged a bullet here.
