In my life, I have loved a boy, a prince, a king, and a madman. Now, I must let him go.
King Dmitri was once a prince of flowers, but when his father was murdered in a treasonous plot by his own family, all of Dima’s hope and innocence shattered. At his lowest point, he took the crown and bonded the land, and in the process, he lost himself.
Now, the boy I once loved is brutal and cruel, and the best I can do for his kingdom is to put us both out of our misery before he destroys it all.
Join our valiant knight as he fights to thaw the icy heart of a mad king in this MM high fantasy romance, featuring: endless pining, so much trauma, a griffin-rider with a heart of gold, a wilting flower prince, more than a little fire, and the end of a kingdom.
REVIEW:
I would like to start off by saying this is the perfect ending to this series. It’s heartbreaking and uplifting and absolutely wonderful.
Dima is such an amazing character. He’s a man who is feeling crushed under the pressure of being king. He’s determined to be the kind of king that his father would be proud of but maybe that’s not the king that his land and his people need.
Arkadii loves his king and would do anything to keep him safe, but he’s starting to feel lost and he doesn’t know what’s for the best anymore.
This is a story of betrayal and heartbreak and how sometimes the hardest part of fixing your life is admitting you need help.
I have loved all three couples in this series but I found that Dima and Arkadii are the ones who touched my heart the most. I think most people have had to deal with figuring out what really is the best for themselves and the people they love.
Dima wants to take care of his people and save their kingdom but doing things the way his father did doesn’t seem to be working for him. He’s feeling himself slip farther away and doesn’t know how to stop it. When he breaks the hearts of the people who love him the most, he finally begins to see the truth of it all.
Arkadii hasn’t stopped trying to save Dima for 15 years, and he’s finally coming to realize that the biggest threat to the man he’s always loved maybe not be coming from the outside.
Watching these two men climb mountains to get back to each other was breathtaking. I was brought to tears even as I cheered for every step they fought for.
The authors have created a magnificent world for their story to be told in. It’s bright and beautiful and I can almost picture it in my head. It’s filled with magical creatures and brilliant magicians and dragons that will take your soaring.
If fantasy is what lives in your heart then this book (and the whole series) will definitely make you happy. And it’s not just the magic that makes it wonderful. Its the people struggling to make life better for themselves and everyone around them, no matter what it takes.
Dima was particularly inspiring because he starts out so broken and slowly figures out how to put himself back together again and I think that’s something we all need to figure out how to do. And he has the best people helping him.
There is one character that I would have liked to have known more about and that’s Dima’s sister Zoya. She’s smart and determined and every bit as determined to do her best for her kingdom, just like her siblings.
This is the best series I’ve read in a while and I have no problems giving this story 5 hearts. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
