“How many times can a person be murdered in your pub?” Margo grinned when he sent her a horrified glance. “Statistically speaking, odds are it won’t happen again.”
“Don’t jinx me. Let’s try to avoid any encounters with the police. I’m not sure Sarah’s recovered from our last adventure.” Murphy had received several lectures from his cousin about the recent murder at his pub.
It hadn’t been his fault. He hadn’t asked someone to murder their husband in the middle of a tasting event at his place. And he certainly hadn’t anticipated being dragged into the investigation as the initial suspect.
All in all, it was an experience Murphy hoped never to have to repeat. The only good part of the entire debacle had been the change in his relationship with George. They’d quit dancing around each other and finally put their feelings on the table.
“Well, if you’ve got things managed, I think I’ll head home.” Margo lived down the lane from George’s place. She picked up Treacle and said her goodbyes. “Try to keep those bees under control.”
“Bugger off.” George collapsed back onto the couch with a sigh. “Maybe buzz off is more accurate.”
“I love you too.” Margo waved to both of them before heading out.
“Have you eaten?”
“I was going to enjoy a late breakfast. More of brunch at this point.” George closed his eyes. He brought his arms up and crossed them over his face. “Control my bees. Control. My. Bees. Control my bees.”
“Don’t think it matters where you put the emphasis. It won’t make sense to you or anyone else who isn’t a posh prick.” Murphy watched him in concern for a few seconds. He knew George would have to allow the stress of the confrontation to bleed off him. “How about I fix us something to eat? Give you a second to recover.”
“Control my bees,” George said the phrase to himself repeatedly until the words seemed to blend into nonsense. “I don’t understand.”
“I’m not even bothering to try. It might break my brain.”
