“He’s cute when he washes behind his ears.” Nico held up Bagpuss in front of the camera and made him wave a paw while Daniel rolled his eyes. They were in the kitchen, having just finished lunch, and decided to Skype on the big screen Jack had fixed to the wall.
Jack wished he were right there.
Exhaustion pounded in his temples. He’d worked through the night, stopping for a couple of hours sleep around six, and continuing after a quick shower to wash away the cobwebs. He had a fridge full of food, thanks to Gareth’s need to look after people. A stack of beef pasties and a dish of shepherd’s pie had provided dinner and supper. The cake Gareth and the boys had brought from the Yarn Looters made a decent breakfast. And now Daniel, Nico, and Bagpuss helped him stay awake.
“He may be cute when he washes his ears.” Daniel didn’t sound convinced. “But he also licks his balls. How gross is that? And then he goes and snuggles with Nico…”
“You’re just jealous he didn’t snuggle with you.”
Daniel stayed suspiciously silent.
“You could bribe him with food,” Jack suggested. “Show him you like him.”
“Cat food smells disgusting. And Nico always feeds him.”
“You could offer him a bit of the chicken you cooked for dinner. He’s bound to like that.”
Daniel’s sudden, arrested look was a sight to behold. When he got up from the table and disappeared from Jack’s field of view, Jack bet he was making for the roasting tray and the chicken carcass, leaving Jack and Gareth to smile helplessly at each other.
“Do you have any idea how much gear one cat needs?”
“Nope. Blissfully ignorant.”
“Yeah. I wish I was too. I’m sure the shop assistant saw us coming.” Gareth grumbled, but Jack knew he really didn’t mind. “You might think this house has enough comfy nooks for a cat to sleep, but you’d be mistaken. Bagpuss now has his own bed, not that he’s taken any notice of the thing since we brought it in. We’ve also bought a cat flap.”
“Which is still in the box, I assume?”
“You weren’t expecting me to saw holes in the back door, were you? I’m leaving that sort of DIY to you.”
“You’d better. I’m in no mood to go shopping for a new door.” Not after he’d just replaced all the small glass panes in the old one for the second time. “How big is that cat flap?”
Gareth shrugged. “Big enough for Bagpuss?”
“Yes, thank you, Captain Obvious. Will it fit between the panes, or do I need to deconstruct the whole door?” Jack could guess the answer from Gareth’s blank look. He and the boys had probably argued over the design and colour of the cat flap. None of them had given a thought to the back door. “And don’t pout. ‘S not as if I can do anything about that from here.”
“Cranky Jack is cranky.”
“And that grin you’re sporting is illegal.”
“Did you sleep at all?”
Damn man knew him far too well. And Jack didn’t want to have it any other way. “Two hours,” he said just as the doorbell chimed.
Gareth heard it too, and he smiled. “Go do your stuff. Call me later.”
Jackie writes a mix of suspense, action adventure, fantasy and history, loves stories with layers, plots with twists and characters with hidden depths. She adores friends to lovers stories, and tales of unexpected reunions, second chances, and men who write their own rules. She blogs about English history and food, has a thing for green eyes, and is a great believer in making up soundtracks for everything, including her characters and the cat.
