She tried to steal treasure from the dragons’ hoard… and stole their hearts instead.
To save her sister from a lascivious lord, Venya must steal a piece of treasure from a legendary dragon’s hoard. Dragons haven’t been seen in several generations, so imagine her surprise when she wakes not one, but two dragons from their hibernation. While the battle-honed Onyx is intent on having her for lunch, the graceful Gold appears more curious than angered by the theft.
Abyss and Ray have very different ideas about what to do with the thief when they catch her. Abyss wants to punish her while Ray is intrigued by her audacity. After Ray turns his mate’s anger to desire, the dragons set out on a rescue mission, intent on capturing the brazen thief and learning more about her. And to see if her Song matches theirs.
Neglected and discarded by her parents, Venya has never bonded with anyone except her sister. Now she has two mighty dragons wanting to woo her and take her as their mate. While she finds delight in their company, she must reassess her own self-worth before she can trust them enough to love them.
But the dragons have exposed themselves to the outside world, and many covet not only their hoard but Ray’s golden scales. And when Venya’s closely held secret is revealed, she becomes a prize worth killing for.
Warnings: abusive parents, childhood trauma.

Good day lovely readers! I’m M.D. Grimm, and I want to thank you for joining me to promote my newest release, Song of Flames (Sisters of Song 1). This is the first book in a duology about two sisters, their adventures, growth, and romances with magical beings. This story is about Venya, the eldest sister, and her unexpected romance with two special dragons who want her for a mate. This is my second MMF romance, and it was a hoot to write. The characters came alive for me, and it was one of the easier projects I’ve worked on. I enjoyed diving into the sister dynamic, their friendship, love, and how they supported and encouraged each other to be better people and find their happiness. I don’t think there’s enough depictions of positive women relationships, and I was satisfied with the results of my own attempts.
All that being said, enjoy this exclusive excerpt!
After much fussing and haranguing and convincing her that her clothes from yesterday needed a good wash, Venya finally surrendered. After Alaiya twisted her short curls into braids, she gleefully helped Venya lace up the faux-dress of emerald green. The bodice was stiff but not confining. It almost felt like a second skin. And despite her modest breasts, she felt fuller, her figure more defined. The split skirt cascaded over her hips and almost touched the floor. The trousers were loose-fitting, and since they were the same variegated shades of green as the skirt, they were camouflaged.
Venya rubbed her bare shoulders, feeling more than a little exposed. “Does this thing have a coat? It’s cold up here with the sea wind.”
Alaiya searched through the wardrobe and discovered a deep green shawl that was thicker and warmer than it appeared.
“But don’t cover too much skin.”
Venya scowled. “Stop that.”
Alaiya flipped her long braids over her shoulder. “Just saying.”
Alaiya had searched other rooms nearby and discovered other similar garments more her size. She’d chosen a bright yellow one with voluminous sleeves and a modest neckline. The color highlighted her dark skin and glossy hair.
She was drop dead gorgeous, and Venya felt like an oaf.
That was why, when someone thumped on their door, Venya hurried out of sight. Alaiya sighed loudly before opening the door and greeting Ray.
“Good morning. I hope you slept well.” His deep, sweet voice was charming.
Venya bit her lower lip.
“We slept wonderfully, thank you. This room is divine. And these clothes are exquisite.”
“I’m glad to hear it. Yes, you look stunning.”
Alaiya giggled while Venya rolled her eyes, rubbing her chest. Her heart hurt and that was stupid. Of course the dragons would be attracted to her sister, they had eyes and they were male. Why her sister kept pushing Venya toward them boggled her mind.
“Is, um, Venya awake?” Ray asked hesitantly.
Venya propped herself against the wall inside the bathroom and crossed her arms over her chest. How generous that he would ask after her. At least dragons didn’t appear to be the ignoring type. She felt like a fool in this stupid garment.
“Oh, yes. She’s just being silly and doesn’t think she looks good in her green outfit. Do you think you could convince her otherwise?”
Venya muttered curses.
“Oh! Yes. I would like to… Venya? May I see?
Venya frowned at his eager tone. Why in the gods’ names did he care what she looked like?
“Venya, come out,” Alaiya said, her tone cheerful but with an undercurrent of steel.
Swallowing her sigh and discomfort, she told herself she wasn’t a coward. She’d braved that cliff, stolen from dragons, challenged a lord, stood up to her parents, disarmed a guard, and was now a guest to said dragons she’d stolen from. She could show herself off in a damn dress thing.
She pushed away from the wall and marched into the bed chamber. She stood in full view and set her hands on her hips, her chin lifted. They’d left the torches burning through the night in deference to their new surroundings, and they added a bit more warmth to the room. Which meant she was on full display. Her shawl had slipped off her shoulders and caught on her bent elbows, exposing her collarbone, her bare shoulders, her arms—that were far too muscled for any woman to have. She was dressed rather scandalously according to the sensibilities of her upbringing.
“I look ridiculous.”
Alaiya tsked. “No, you—”
“Oh.” Ray stared at her with wide eyes that almost glowed and smoke trailing out of his nostrils. He seemed stunned… and not in a way that threatened humor or hesitation to speak the truth. In fact, his demeanor reminded Venya of how people reacted when first spotting her sister.
Awe.
Venya loosened her stance and resisted hugging herself and hiding in the shawl. How did Alaiya deal with this sort of attention every day? It was disconcerting. Uncomfortable. And yet….
Nice.
“I want to see,” Abyss’s cavernous voice echoed.
Venya jolted, unaware he was even there. His dark head nudged Ray aside as he peered through the doorway. His silver eyes darkened, turning stormy. Venya gulped.
What did that mean? Was he angry again?
“You look ravishing.”
Venya gaped.
Alaiya grinned. “Doesn’t she? Thank you for confirming. I tried to tell her but she doesn’t listen to me.”
“Hey, look now—”
“Come outside. The morning is lovely and fresh.”
“Please,” Ray piped up somewhere behind Abyss.
“Please,” Abyss echoed.
Alaiya stared at Venya, her eyes pleading.
Venya gritted her teeth, and her stomach chose that moment to growl. She grimaced.
Abyss chuckled, the sound vibrating her bones. “Come. We will feed you.”
The dragons withdrew, and Alaiya snatched her hand and dragged her along. They were startled when they realized burning torches were evenly spaced along the walls, giving sufficient light. The flames caused rainbows to dance across the polished stone. Peering closer, Venya realized the fire wasn’t normal. Was it dragon’s fire?
“Well, it looks like they’re not about to eat us,” Alaiya said with a giggle.
Venya scowled at her. “It might be lasting longer than I thought.”
“Don’t make me slap you.”
“Why else would he say that? I can’t believe it.”
Alaiya kept a tight hold on her hand and marched after Ray, cautious of his tail.
“I can.” She met her gaze. “And if you keep being blind, you’ll miss out.”
“On what?”
They came out and the new sun had yet to wash its light over the mountains. But the predawn light was peaceful, and the air was, indeed, fresh. Her gaze turned irrevocably to the dragons as they stood there, the sea at their backs, the dim light shimmering over their scales. They were in stark contrast and yet complimented each other. It was a jolt to realize they were focused on her.
“Happiness,” Alaiya whispered.
“Wh-why are they staring at me?”
She didn’t answer. Instead, she kissed Venya’s cheek and stepped away. The dragons gaze didn’t follow her. That was the first time Venya started to think Alaiya could be right.
