REVIEW:
Having flipped sides from special ops to supernatural, a very human, Taylor, was a wanted man who needed a new identity. Everything he had was lost, so the Somerset Clan did what they did naturally – they gained another son. However, momma Somerset gave Taylor the last name of Pyke, the same surname of detective Marshall Pyke, son of Tim Pyke featured in book ten. When Marshall identifies Taylor as his fated mate, Taylor must take Marshall’s word for it, as Taylor doesn’t have the same instincts.
The Human Pyke is the penultimate book in the Saint Lakes series, which is fast concluding. More of the final pieces are put into place – some are courtesy of Marshall’s old police department. The clan knows the names of some major players and attempts to discover the final game plan. Some reinforcements and discoveries could be for good or bad, and no one will know until the next book. As for the relationship between Marshall and Taylor, their journey gets sorted, but the scene is set for the series finale. Oh, and yes, I enjoyed it.
The story is told in the third person from the viewpoints of Taylor and Marshall. The world that has built up over the series is almost complete. This time included – the police, an investigation, a local crime lord, and a budding relationship within the realm that the Saint Lakes clan has evolved into. Before everything comes to a head, the spotlight is aimed at Marshall and Taylor, who is new to the supernatural world and thus has much to learn of its do’s, don’ts, and protocols.
What I liked about this coupling is that, regardless of the need to be with their mate, Marshall and Taylor’s backgrounds ensure they understand that the clan’s welfare comes first. Taylor Goes undercover, and Marshall uses his contacts to dig deeper into the activities and associations of specific individuals. To this end, the story has a distinct detective novel vibe, while the Saint Lakes clan is always in the background as reinforcements and some deliciously dramatic scenes.
In all, a delightful build-up to the last book.
