Book 1: Real Trouble
West Coast Forensics, Book 1
Two men on opposite sides of the law: will they be able to set aside their differences and trust love?
Danylo Peters has issues, lots of them. He’s not on Piedras Island by accident, he’s not a nice guy, and Peters isn’t his real name. Dany’s hiding, trying to escape his family’s influence and start a new life. But he must have been born under a bad sign because the very man he’s really running from is one of the first he runs into.
A new life in a new town seemed like the right decision for Soren Jorgenson, especially after a difficult case left him recovering from a gunshot wound and lonely as he’d ever been. Finding Dany living on Piedras brings back all the feelings he’d tried to lock away. He’s angry and bitter and Dany is not going to continue to get away with his old tricks. Too bad Dany is just as compelling as he ever was.
The two men find themselves on opposite sides of Soren’s first case on Piedras, but neither is able to deny the attraction between them. They keep finding themselves in compromising situations; if they’re found out there will be Real Trouble.
Real Trouble is set in the Veiled Intentions world, while familiar characters appear Real Trouble can be read as a standalone. Real Trouble is a dual POV following Soren Jorgenson and Danylo Peters as they fight their way to their HEA and is the first in the new West Coast Forensics series. These characters originally appeared in the Shielded Hearts series (formally Accidental Roots).

Cody Prescott looked terrible.
He was probably a few years younger than Soren, but he looked ten years older that morning. They had to wait to talk to him because of the number of guests waiting to be checked out. Prescott behaved professionally as one guest after another approached the desk, and he not only waived charges for the night but offered a discount on a future stay. In addition to this fire costing Prescott a building, it was seriously damaging his bottom line. Even a newcomer like Soren knew it would be a blow to the island if Brooch Resort closed. Who might benefit from something like that—a larger economic hit?
He hated to think that an unknown someone might be trying to run Prescott out of business, but the value of the resort just in the land was in the millions. Was someone trying to force the value down? Did someone want Prescott to sell while he was in a vulnerable position? Soren pulled his notepad from his shirt pocket and jotted down a few questions he had for Cody Prescott.
While they waited, Soren glanced around the lobby. The interior had been kept true to the era of its construction. Even the lighting was, if not original, crafted to appear that way. Directly behind Prescott was a wall of black-and-white photographs. Soren figured they were shots of famous people who’d stayed at or visited the resort. There was even one of Theodore Roosevelt, with his bushy mustache, sitting in front of a gigantic tree stump like he’d stalked it down and killed it himself.
A grand staircase crafted from mahogany or some other dark wood swept down from the upper levels, where most of the guest rooms were located. Birdy had informed him there were twenty-two rooms, as well as several separate cottages that were rented for longer stays.
On the walls without the photographs hung several framed watercolors and oil paintings. Whoever the artists had been, they seemed talented to Soren’s untrained eye, capturing the essence of Piedras and the surrounding islands: dramatic cliffs falling to the sea, lonely seabirds huddled on rocky beaches, a meadow full of wildflowers, and even a portrait of a disgruntled sheep staring directly at the artist. A curio cabinet with a display of old mining equipment and other things used by the lime miners and their families who’d lived on the property sat against the staircase.
When the last of the guests departed, Soren and Birdy approached the desk.
“Hey, Birdy—I mean, Deputy Flynn,” Prescott said. “What can I do for you?”
Even his voice was tired. Soren wondered if he’d been up all night. Most likely.
“Cody, Deputy Jorgensen and I need to ask you a few questions, but first I want to say how sorry I am this happened.”
Cody grimaced. Maybe it was supposed to be a smile, but Soren wasn’t convinced by it. The guy was barely holding himself together. Soren was beginning to agree with the Flynns. Prescott was seriously shaken up—or he was an excellent actor.
“Thanks.” Cody’s mask slipped a little further, and for a hot second he looked like he might break down right there, his eyes filling with tears. Instead he raised a finger and muttered something like “Just a sec, I need to grab this” before disappearing behind the desk for a moment, and when he stood back up, he’d wiped his eyes and plastered a professional expression back on his face.
“Do you want to talk here—or maybe in your office?” Flynn asked.
“Might as well do it here. Laura called in sick, so there’s no one to cover the front desk if we go back there. At least Mike King was here for the eleven-to-eight shift—but I was here too, of course. I’m living in the Rose Cottage right now, and I was the one who called the fire department when I smelled smoke. I’ve never been so scared in my life.”

Book 3: Real Risk
West Coast Forensics, Book 3
It’s possible they’re a match but first the two men will have to survive trial by fire.
Chief Flynn is fighting smoke and flames, tirelessly protecting the lives and property of his fellow islanders from yet another spate of fires.
Arson or accident?
When injury puts him on the sidelines, West Coast Forensics Arson Investigator Kimball Frye offers his assistance. Frye is The Most Irritating Man in the World, a condescending know-it-all who rubs Devon the wrong way.
Or does he?
Decades ago an arsonist stole his family from him since then Frye has devoted his life to putting them behind bars. At forty-nine, he doesn’t believe in permanent relationships, instead preferring the company of interchangeable younger men.
Is the arsonist trying to shift the blame onto Devon, or trying to kill him? If it’s the latter it just might work.
Feeling the pull of attraction to Devon as the firebug grows bolder is inconvenient. Will Kimball listen to his heart or his head? The younger men he’s always preferred are nothing like the solid, stalwart Fire Chief.
Real Risk is the third in the West Coast Forensics series and can be read as a standalone but may be enjoyed more if you read the Real Trouble and Real Danger first. It is dual POV following Devon Flynn and Kimball Frye as they bicker and fumble their way to their happily ever after.
