Sixteen years ago, Alex Nova defied the impossible and shook the world to its core. He made children into superhumans and, in doing so, made a villain out of himself.
At age twenty, Rex Nova took the consequences of his father’s actions and used them to make himself into a superhero, so he could protect the world his father almost broke.
Unknown to him, however, are the secrets buried in his genetics. Hidden truths soaked in tainted blood.
Like his father before him, the choices Rex makes when his back is up against the wall will force him to confront things about who he really is, and what he’s willing to become to protect the people he loves.
This time, the consequences will be of his own wreaking, and the fallout will threaten everything he cares about.
REVIEW:
I couldn’t wait to read this book, I dived straight into it, as soon as I finished book 2, as I was intrigued to find out what happens next. So much happens in this book and the excerpts from Mia are chilling, she is so single minded in her pursuit of wiping out the liquid onyx survivors, to right the wrong she has done, but is doing so much wrong and hurting so many people, it is mind boggling.
When Rex and Damon are called to a possible threat and Rex’s worst fears are realised, when the people he thought he had protected are hurt and he retaliates by killing one of the assailants. Damon doesn’t understand why Rex would kill, and Rex is so overcome by guilt and recriminations, that his actions have led to the death of one those he has sworn to protect. Damon and Rex have a physical as well as a verbal argument, with both unwilling to back down they have each drawn a line in the sand.
Does this mean the end to their relationship before it really begins, or can they see a way forward that they can both live with? I was on tenterhooks, hoping that they could get past this but very much afraid that they couldn’t.
Jamie is always there in the background, with so much history between him and Rex but with both seeming to be unable to risk breaking out of the friendzone and Rex more willing to take a chance on Damon than on Jamie.
There are twists and turns with this book, the ongoing battle with the Mages heats up and their arch nemesis Mia, having more in common with Rex than he could ever imagine. Secrets buried for years come to the fore and her despicable end game is revealed.
The finale to this book is heartbreaking and I cried copious amounts of tears, using up a box of tissues and left puffy eyed and reeling. No, no, no, it just can’t be true, this can’t be the end, how can Rex ever come back from this and what does it mean for his family and friends?
