Nathan focused on the kiosk, shutting out Cameron and Syn’s banter, and had a sudden mental shift as his mind projected into a void with a rippling river of dark water. He stood on a three-mast frigate that gently rocked as it made its way into the starless oblivion. At the wheel stood a tall, lanky man with a ruddy complexion, whose body remained enveloped in an inky robe. The material absorbed the ambient light, manifesting as a smoky fog swirling around him. On his back hung a staff with marks drawn into it in crusted, brown blood, equally spaced, as if created with a ruler.
“Excuse me? Can you help me?” Nathan asked. The man silently extended his left arm with an open gaunt hand covered in paper-thin skin stretched taut over the bones, then waited. Momentary confusion blossomed before Nathan took a chance and visualized their parking pass, which appeared next to him and floated into the man’s hand. The man brought it close to his hooded face, before he gently returned it to Nathan, hand patiently splayed open again. Nathan recognized his mind’s representation of the kiosk system. It was Charon, and he expected payment. He visualized two gold Roman coins, which dropped into Charon’s hand that then closed around the coins and disappeared into his robes. The man took his staff and propped it into a Niche on the wooden deck where he stood, he then pulled it through the wheel. It took on a life of its own, both restraining and controlling the direction of the wheel.
He glided, more than walked, to an alcove that led to rickety steps descending below deck. Nathan followed him down. Faceless men sat on splintered benches rowing large oars on both halves of the ship; their rippling muscles worked rhythmically, accentuating their naked bodies, which Nathan paused to admire. Movement to his left caught his attention, and he swayed over to peer through the portholes that lined the walls. Expecting to see the black void, Nathan blinked in surprise when met with the inside view of the parking structure that he took to be representative of the camera feeds throughout the garage. He poked his head out of one hole and found Syn sitting, seemingly bored in the SUV, playing a game on her phone. Laughing to himself, he decided to play a prank by projecting the Michael Myers theme song as the ringtone, and a text message:
I see you!!!
