New paranormal romance from best-selling MM authors Charlie Cochet and Macy Blake.
A grumpy lion shifter duke with secrets, a sassy human who knows nothing of the shifter world, and a fiery arrangement neither of them expected.
Cormac Donegan, Duke of Everard, is all too familiar with the perils of his shifter world, especially as a Dahlia, one of the dragon king’s elite spies. After a mission nearly costs him his life, Cormac is sidelined, healing and grieving his heavy losses. Then a different kind of trouble shows up on his doorstep: a human claiming to be his fiancé.
When Jason Reaves is nearly killed in a house fire, it becomes clear that someone is trying to murder him. With his already fragile health deteriorating, Jason’s only hope is to call in the debt a stranger owes his father—a favor that promises safety, protection…and marriage.
Jason’s escape leads him and his service dog, Mouse, to an impressive country estate. He’s expecting the older man who’d made the promise, not his ruggedly handsome son—who happens to be a Duke, as in rich and royal.
Will this Cinderfella find his happily ever after in the arms of a dashing—if somewhat irritable—duke? Or will Cormac’s secrets prove to be more dangerous than the shifters hunting him?
REVIEW:
Note: This is the second in the series and as such should be read in order. The timeline of this story overlaps with Notorious and thus has many spoilers for that book 🙂
Jason Reaves is in trouble. He’s been the target of attempted murder – and he has already lost his father. His father has left some letters for him in the safety deposit box that are only to be read in an emergency. The letter sends him to a friend who has sworn to marry him if he needs protection. Jason thinks he’s going to a former business partner of his father’s but then he meets a very handsome man who is obviously the son of whoever the man was that his worked with. Also, the man’s name is not Duke. He is an actual Duke. Whaaaaaaat?
Cormac Donegan, Duke of Everard, secret elite spy of the dragon kind and former fiance of the murdered dragon prince, is shocked when a human shows up at his country estate. He had no idea that his father had sworn to marry and protect a human. He reads the letter and he vows to fulfill his father’s vow. What he doesn’t expect is to fall in love with the human. Oh and the human also has NO IDEA that Cormac is a shifter as are the members of his household. He also has a condition that has him passing out and relying on his service dog, Mouse. Jason can’t figure out why Cormac would want to take him on.
When the shifters who tried to kill Jason show up at Cormac’s estate. well the cat’s out of the bag, so to speak. Jason freaks out. This is NOT the way Cormac wanted Jason to find out about their world. Surprisingly, Cormac is able to convince Jason that things aren’t that bad. Of course Jason now sees Cormac as his own Mr. Darcy 😉 Jason will now have to make his debut into society as Cormac’s fiance. He is NOT ready for this – but needs must 🙂
As Cormac and Jason get closer, they share their pasts and family life. A surprise photograph and further discussion provides the break that the Dahlias and the king have been looking for the clue as to what was behind the murder of the dragon prince. Jason is shocked and agrees to help. The bad guys are waiting for them though and Cormac, Jason and the rest of the team are in grave danger. Can they escape and save the day?
Jason is adorable! His inner (and sometimes not so inner) monologue is a hoot! I found him to just be a really sweet character who has depths that weren’t initially evident. He is a ray of sunshine for Cormac who is a bit of a grumpy Gus. On paper they should not work at all. But they really seem to work 😀 Jason and Cormac soon form a formidable team. Despite Jason’s condition, Cormac is completed smitten. He’s also devoted to his now fiance. Jason dealing with the shifter world is the source of much hilarity. Honestly there is so much fun and action and humor and sweetness in this story. While not everything is resolved here, there is a lovely HEA for our heroes. I can’t wait for the next book and more fun and games in this interesting world. Highly recommended.
Gary Furlong does another outstanding job performing this story. There are a LOT of characters and the voice choices were spot on. We have a lot of familiar characters from the first book and they are completely consistent here. The hysteria, the fear, the swooning, the love – they are all on display here. A really find job again with this series. I cannot wait to see what happens next. I was on the edge of my seat for half this audio!
