Pritchard waved him off and got up to pour more coffee. “Since you have a lot less time than usual to prepare, I guess I ask because I want you to be absolutely ready. More coffee?”
“Please.” Alex pushed his cup toward him. “This stone I’m getting for you…it’s the most valuable pluck I’ve ever made. If they don’t know what they have, since it’s in a crate in some back-page of the travel guide of the museum…”
“You’re in a hurry because someone definitely found out what’s in that basement, and it will be moved tomorrow night.”
“To more secure locations, yeah…”
“To the Vatican.”
Alex almost dropped his coffee cup, but he managed to merely spill a few drops. He looked at Pritchard, feeling horror-stricken. So it wasn’t just the most dangerous assignment they’d ever given him, it obviously included the absolute most challenging and competent adversary they’d ever come across, hence the agency he’d hoped to never see the name of in prelim notes to a heist.
Many years ago, they and the security agency had both been after the same artifact. Alex had been about sixteen. At that age, he’d been a lot more confident than his skills could back up. He’d been left out of that heist completely, and not even worked as a decoy. He’d learned his lesson by watching a six-man team go down. Only Pritchard made it home and that was after six weeks of trail-dusting so nothing would point to Mr. Henry.
But the Vatican? That agency worked for the Vatican?
“Is this why we’re dusting all the way to Switzerland?”
Pritchard didn’t seem as unmoved by the situation as Alex would have thought at first, and if Pritchard seemed uneasy, Alex was scared, and the feeling was not welcomed. Not right then—not thirty minutes before he went on the mission.
“We’re tracking them, Alex.” Pritchard pointed to three computers and four cellphones on a table by the window.
“So, you’re not sending me to the wolves.”
