Footwork by TA Moore is possibly the most fun book I’ve ever written.
It is shameless. It is indulgent. I also think it’s pretty good, but it wasn’t written with that in mind. All I cared about when I wrote it was ‘is this fun?’. And it was.
So is the playlist that I listened to while I was writing it. I’m going to be honest with you, this playlist was entirely curated by the pure dopamine hit I felt listening to the songs. There’s no elegance or narrative integrity to the choices here, they were purely selected on the grounds of ‘does this make my brainmeats feel good?’.
These ones cleared that relatively low bar by a mile.
Disclaimers before we dig in. A: These weren’t the only songs I listened to. I am faithless and easily distracted when it comes to music. They are just the five that I played most often. B: I didn’t listen to them WHILE I was actually writing. My brain doesn’t work like that, it’s too easily distracted. But I did listen to them while I was THINKING about writing.
Rob Zombie’s Dragula – Fight scenes…OK, and sex. Look, I know that it’s a bit weird lyrically for that, but read the book and tell me that’s not a Bode vibe? Or you can trust me when I say, I wrote him and it is.
Hayloft I and II by Mother, Mother – This is just good narrative music. It has a nice fast beat, a good story, and it makes my brain jig along in a nice productive way. It lubricates the storymaking.
This is Hell by Rina Sawayama – This has been on more than one playlist. It fits a general mid-book vibe, when all the shit has hit the fan but the relationship has just clicked in the RIGHT way. It’s a sort of ‘ok, this sucks but WE’VE got it’ song.
Last Train to Nowhere by the Ghost Hounds – This is actually my Sweeney playlist. It works for both Dirty Deeds and Footwork. It’s not got a specific moment to tag it too, but it’s just good for getting in that world’s mood, you know?
Finally…sorta… Scotty Doesn’t Know by Lustra – Oh, you can stop looking at me like that. You can’t shame me. I’m SHAMELESS and this is absolutely Paul’s song. And I do like Paul, he’s a great guy and I have plans for him hopefully. BUT…yeah. It’s his song.
And just because I am not the world’s most decisive person…
Honourable mention goes to W.I.T.C.H by Devon Cole. Even by my relatively lax standards I struggle to link this thematically to Footwork at all. I just really like the song and listen to it a lot.
AND this wasn’t even out when Footwork was written, but it’s such a Bode song. I had to include it (even though liking this song resulted in me being followed by like 54 fake Chase McDaniels on Tiktok. Like…dudes, I’m not giving you money).

TA Moore is a Northern Irish writer of romantic suspense, urban fantasy, and contemporary romance novels. A childhood in a rural, seaside town fostered in her a suspicious nature, a love of mystery, and a streak of black humour a mile wide. As her grandmother always said, ‘she’d laugh at a bad thing that one’, mind you, that was the pot calling the kettle black. TA Moore studied History, Irish mythology, English at University, mostly because she has always loved a good story. She has worked as a journalist, a finance manager, and in the arts sectors before she finally gave in to a lifelong desire to write.
