After a late-night slip and fall in his kitchen, Detective Ronan O’Mara awakens to find his mother, Erin, who’s been dead for the last decade, at his side comforting him. Thanks to the blow to the head, he’s able to see and speak with spirits. Is this newfound gift a side effect of his concussion, or is it here to stay?
Still reeling over his sudden mediumship abilities, Ronan and the cold case team begin working a new investigation involving a nurse who was found murdered after a blind date. Complicating matters further, Ronan can see the young woman’s spirit, while Tennyson cannot, leaving the psychic to grapple with this blow to his confidence.
The hunt is on for Amber Thomas’s killer. Ronan is pulling double duty working the case and speaking with demanding spirits who won’t give him a moment’s peace. As the investigation deepens, the list of potential suspects grows. From Amber’s best friend to her high school sweetheart, nursing school professors, and that fateful blind date, no one’s as innocent as they seem.
Who murdered the young nurse? Why? More importantly, will Ronan’s new ability lead him to Amber’s killer?
REVIEW:
Disclaimer notes first off – you need to read the previous 22 books and the previous series Haunted Souls. Most of the characters from the previous series, are mentioned in this newest addition to the Cold Case Psychic series.
Ok, now that I’ve gotten that part revealed, let’s talk about this newest edition to the Cold Case world. This one gave me some feels I wasn’t expecting. I always expect to laugh and root for the guys to solve the case, but I usually don’t cry when reading a Pandora Pine story. Well, this one got me in the feels. Hanky level on this one is a solid three out of five.
I blame it on the depth of her characters. They are all so well developed, and I have become so invested in them – sometimes I forget they are fictional, yet beloved characters. Ronan and Tennyson are this wonderfully imperfect couple, that somehow make it work despite the barriers and situations they find themselves in. Especially this time as Ronan gets a taste of what Tennyson deals with every day.
I love the way Pandora weaves the latest mystery the gang is trying to solve throughout the book. It’s one of my favorite parts – to test my sleuthing skills against her writing and see if I can figure out who done it, before she reveals it. Teasing with just the right amount of information and then making you second guess yourself. Was it the blind date guy, was it some unknown person?
Her prose is brilliantly crafted and elicits tears, laughter, fear, love and pain on occasion.
Ten pressed a kiss to the back of Ronan’s hand. “Jesus, Ronan, you’ve been shot, stabbed, punched, kicked, and God knows what else, and you nearly killed yourself in the kitchen. I sure as hell didn’t have that cause of death on my bingo card.”
In this book I found myself drawn into the wonderful scenes between Ronan and his mother Erin. So well crafted. Sometimes when the going gets tough, we just need a hug from our mother – ghost or not. But you also get a feel for the depth of Ronan and Ten’s relationship as they navigate the unchartered waters of Ronan’s newly received gift.
Does Ronan keep his newly found gifts? Who is revealed as Amber’s killer? The answers to these questions and many more are just waiting to be revealed, when you pick up the 23rd book in this series.
I highly recommend this book and series from Pandora Pine and can’t wait for the next book to be released. So remember, run don’t walk to your favorite book purchasing site and pick this one up.
