Synopsis
Liam Lamech buried Valerian, the vampire he recognized as his mate, next to Hell’s Gate nearly two thousand years ago. When the vampire king frees the vile creature, Liam determines not to give in to the strongest emotion a vampire can experience — the pull of an eternal mate. Liam can’t kill Valerian, yet he vows never to love him. Still, he’ll protect the undead man with his own life.
Valerian detests the memory of his days as a Roman emperor, though not nearly as much as he hates Liam, the vampire God chose as his mate. Aware they were meant to spend eternity together, the monster buried Val so close to Satan that a piece of his soul still burns. Even though Liam is one of the vampire king’s most revered warriors, Valerian vows to make the bastard pay!

Joshua snagged Valerian moments before he collided with a craggy formation. “You contemptuous bastards need to control your profanity and, one way or another, you are going to stop interfering with my life.”
Valerian sprang to his feet. “You’ve lost your f’ing mind.”
“Me? Really, Valerian? I should have let you personally meet the outcropping behind you.” Joshua sat on a nearby boulder. “The Rocky Mountains can be a bit unforgiving when you crash into them.” Expelling air, Johua studied Valerian. “No one would have thought less of you had you stayed in Philadelphia and let someone else handle this situation.”
“You royal jackasses stroll through people’s minds as if you’re surveying a piece of property that belongs to you.” Settling on the rock beside Joshua, Valerian told him, “I merely had the thought because…”
“Because Liam can be difficult to stomach. I get it. We all do.” He faced Valerian. “You can’t keep running away from what will be.”
“Why the hell are you even here?”
Joshua wondered the same thing. Sten could have handled this shit with a thought. Maybe it was because, next to the king and Mace, Joshua loved Liam most. For the life of him, he couldn’t figure out why the vampire he considered a trusted friend was behaving so crassly with the being God chose for him. Joshua found himself suddenly thankful his beloved had been human. He, Sten, and Christopher managed to work things out quicker. Joshua thought Kam’s bonding had been hard. Liam should have learned something from the pharaoh.
“I’m here because Sten wants you to bring Darius LeVante to Philadelphia.”
“What?” Valerian jumped up. “Why me? Where’s Liam?”
“He doesn’t know yet.”
“I won’t do it.”
“Valerian, return to California.” Joshua implanted information providing directions to locate Darius. “It is not too late for me to haul your ass back into the sky and drop you without the ability to transform.”
“Liam did this. He wanted me to bash my body into the rocks. Fucking Chr…”
“Careful, Valerian. Look, we could debate for thousands of years why Liam buried Publius Licinius Valerianus.” Joshua stood. “Are you still that man?”
“Damn it, Joshua, Liam is no angel. He stalks death.”
“And he always will. It’s his duty, and ours, to keep God’s world safe for humans.”
“Doesn’t explain his reason for doing this.”
“Sten knocked your ass from the sky.” If Liam and Valerian did not get their shit together soon, more death was likely.
“Why would the king do that?”
