BLURB:
Miller Aldrun has spent his life being Cassandra, the prophet nobody believes. Born knowing when a dangerous, armed presence is nearby, Miller has always been dismissed—and had to see the people he cares about hurt. Grieving the death of a closeted lover, he finds solace cruising the waterways of Spinner’s Drift, making sure the people in the outlying islands feel safe.
When Miller discovers the weekly gathering at The Magic of Books, its members become the family he didn’t know he could have. That includes Piers Constantine, who’s hiding on the islands with his cousin to elude her stalker.
Golden, kind, and humble, Piers finds Miller fascinating. But Piers is destined to leave the island, and even if he’s the only person who ever had faith in Miller, Miller can’t bear the thought of losing someone else he loves.
Then Miller wakes up with that familiar warning in his gut. The long-ago evil that has been stalking Piers and his cousin is catching up. Miller’s gift might be the only way to protect them… but he’ll have to let Piers in. Together, they plunge into one of the island’s oldest mysteries. For once, being Cassandra is on Miller’s side. Piers and Miller conceive a desperate plan to set them free from fear—but if Miller fails, he knows nothing will be left of him but the salt-bitter sea.
REVIEW:
So far I am loving this series! A little bit of magic makes everything more interesting!
Miller doesn’t always love his “gift”. Knowing there’s a bad guy on the way doesn’t really help anything if no one believes him. But the friends he’s made on Spinner’s Drift have a little magic of their own and when Miller tells them that “something wicked this way comes” they are all in!
Piers thinks that Miller is the most wonderful man he’s ever met. Now if only he could convince Miller that Piers isn’t just messing around and truly cares for him! Miller’s self esteem issues are hard to overcome but Piers isn’t about to give up.
I love this little group of people. This is my favorite kind of series. A new couple with every book with some looks at the couples who came before and their happily-ever-after lives. Miller and Piers are both such easy characters to love and I was cheering for them from the very start.
Amy Lane does a great job of building this mysterious and quirkly little island for all her characters to live on. And seeing Scout and Lucky again is like visiting old friends, along with Kayleigh, Marcus, Helen and Larissa. Oh and Callan! All of these characters are relatible and interesting, but this is nothing new for this author. Creating people we can care about is her specialty I think.
I can almost picture Spinner’s Drift in my head and I think I would love to visit a place where magic is alive. The lore of the island is so interesting and I love how the Luck Mechanics are working so hard to make things right!
The angst in this story isn’t really between the characters, its mostly brought in by outside issues and I am enjoying that as well.
As always, there’s just the right amount of sexy spiciness. It’s balanced out by gentle caring and determination on both Miller and Piers part to do their best to help the people they care about.
I’m hoping book three doesn’t take too long. Patience is not a virture I excel at and I can’t wait to see where this series is taking me next!
