When the family business is death, one never knows who will show up on the slab, but even a notorious serial killer deserves a funeral, doesn’t she?
Keir Dearly, the sole proprietor of Dearly & Son Funeral Home, walks a fine line with his “clients”—help fulfill their last requests at the cost of possibly unleashing evil on an unsuspecting world or ignore their pleas to maintain the balance between good and evil as his deceased father continues to advise.
When Nancy Plum lands on the slab, Keir must make a harrowing decision. Should he ignore Nancy’s spirit and resist digging into the mysteries surrounding her sudden suicide, or should he crack open her life and unravel why she allegedly killed eleven young women? With Nancy’s refusal to give any answers, the spirits of her victims come forward to offer their help, but when there are two new victims, how can Keir walk away?
With their commitment on solid ground, Keir and Dash’s gifts continue to develop, but so does Jay Frick’s disdain for their relationship to the point the man becomes enraged, and all hell breaks loose right there in the mortuary.
REVIEW:
Wow I didn’t see this one coming. You are in for a real adventure!
Keir and Dash are finally settling in to a committed relationship. There have been a few bumps in the road and they are navigating their journey together. They are also learning more about Keir being “The Gatekeeper” and Dash being “The Key” with all this afterlife world stuff. At least they have Keir’s father that they can call back to explain from time to time and Josephine is keeping a close eye on these chosen men. As guardians and protectors watch over Keir he learns that the “guest” that he has been asked to help prepare for cremation is none other the the “Notorious Nancy”, the serial killer of almost a dozen young streetwalker prostitutes a few years ago. But when her spirit appears and her victims gather it is becoming clearer that things don’t add up. And when two more young girls die after her suicide in prison things become obvious that she can’t possibly be the killer. Now Keir has to get to the bottom of her story while Dash is sent to figure out why Jay was taken and try to get his bane of existence back to make his Dearly happy.
Be prepared because this comes at you from all sides. New pairs are forming and they aren’t all exactly what they seem to be. With Dash’s special gift he can tell if a person has a good or evil soul. But when demons appear to help stop the coming trouble both men are obviously confused at times whom to actually trust. The Mistress of Satan that has an aura as black as coal but wants to help stop the rise up of evil trying to get a stronghold to rule over humans causes Dash to be a tad bit conflicted. And Keir isn’t sure what to think as he digs further and further into Nancy’s past.
I love both these men and it is obvious, even to the leaders of the afterlife, that they really are meant to be together. I just want them to lean on and trust the love that they have for each other and move forward as a strong team because the big battle sounds like it’s coming sooner than they want and a united front will be essential.
I’m thrilled that we are connecting more and more with the side characters. Both from Dash’s shop and the people and friends from Keir’s more eclectic group. I love that they are blending together over Poker Night and making new friends. I’m not sure how the shop friends are going to take all this other worldly existence but I won’t be surprised if they just roll with it like they did with Dash being gay and an ex-con.
I can’t wait for the next book as we discover more new beings and learn more about the danger coming. But having Keir and Dash as a committed team both romantically and supportively to battle evil will be paramount. What a fascinating and intriguing series this is and I can’t wait for more!!! I do highly recommend that you read this series in order.
