Othniel “Neil” Ricci has a sweet new gig working at his uncle’s flower shop—good hourly pay, free room and board, and he has absolutely no idea that the city is apparently infested with monsters.
That is, until he does.
Louis Morénas-Mostro is a werewolf and an underboss in the monstrous crime family who rule over everything that goes bump in the night. When a prized magical artifact becomes inadvertently attached to Neil, Lou is determined to get it back at any cost.
…Even pretending to date him.
Neil finds himself at odds with an entire monster family, their rebellious enemies, and his own growing attraction to Lou. He hopes he lives long enough to find out if their explosive chemistry can lead to something real, but first he has to make sure he doesn’t end up as monster kibble.
REVIEW:
So I’m going to be honest and say that I wasn’t sure about this book at first. Neil is adorable and I love his feisty attitude. He’s fun and sweet and trying hard to make a life for himself. My issue was with Lou.
I didn’t like him much at first and in fact I struggled with that through the first third of the book. I didn’t like his arrogance and attitude. I understood the why of it, but I still didn’t like it.
But as the story went on, Lou mellowed out and became a charater I could connect with. He became exactly who Neil needed him to be and that was wonderful.
I loved the premise of this story as well. I’m a big fan of the supernatural world and this story had a little bit of everything I loved.
However it kind of delved into “fan-fiction” territory for me in some places. Not for long but it was like the author was trying to put in too much information into too short of a story. I think it would have benefitted from lengthening the whole story instead of just throwing so much at us in such a short time. There’s a lot of world-building going on here and I think it turned out pretty good, but it was touch and go for a while. Also, I think the title was a bit…silly. But that’s a personal preference and I’m glad I took the time to read the blurb and didn’t let the title throw me off.
But, all in all I enjoyed this read. Once I connected with both characters I became anxious to see how the story all played out and how we were going to get our happy ending. The side characters, especially Lou’s “brothers,” were interesting and there were a couple, especially Myrna, that made me smile every time they popped up!
I also will admit to be actually surprised by one of the plot twists and that doesn’t happen very often for me so kudos to K.L.Hiers for that! This is not the first book I’ve enjoyed from this author and I look forward to seeing what they come up with next.
