I love books with found family, especially when they’re mixed in with another genre.
Family isn’t always about blood, and often the men I write about have lost their families and/or are estranged by them for various reasons. It’s much harder to get through life on your own, and no matter how capable, or stubborn you are about being able to handle everything, having support or someone who can tell you to stop being an idiot is important.
I love the found family of Simon, Forge, and Declan in The Sleepless City. These men have known each other for decades, and in the case of Forge and Declan, centuries, and have been there for each other no matter what. As the series progresses their family grows with the addition of Ben, Blair, and Lucas.
Ben still has his own family, but that doesn’t make his Boggslake family any the less of one. In Double Exposure he introduces Simon to his New Zealand family, and although Simon dreads it, based on his own experience, things go very differently this time round.
Postscript has a mix of family and found family. Mason and his sister, Fiona, get on well, and they’re still in contact with their parents and extended family. Elijah is staying with his aunts, and has chosen a path his parents aren’t enamoured with. The small town of Kedgetown has a strong supportive community, which is one of the things I love about reading and writing small town stories.
I’ve enjoyed the different takes on found family, and as the promotion I’m in this month shows, there are many ways to write about it.
