REVIEW:
I love this series and this book might just be my most favorite yet!
Lance McCartney refuses to bow down to his demanding Dad. So, with the few bucks he has in his wallet, because dear old dad froze everything including his own money he earned, he arrives at his older half-brother Allen’s door in Crawford City, Tennessee straight from the Big Apple. Lance knows he has a lot of groveling to do when he couldn’t even be bothered to attend Allen and Gib’s wedding. But what he thought he had known all his life about Allen and Allen’s mother Catherine was very quickly debunked and his dire needs became a bridge to heal those deep, troubled feelings and wounds. Now Allen is helping him get a job with his friend good friend Todd to get a feel for construction. When Todd’s best friend Jake shows up at their meet and greet it’s obvious Lance and Jake have eyes for each other. But can a rich and successful love ‘em and leave ‘em playboy bachelor and a closeted med school dropout who dreams of being an architect make a go of it in small town Tennessee? Or are these two men Finding Home together?
Those two men’s story really worked for me. So much so that I honestly didn’t miss not having any sexy times in this book at all. Their love story carried the book without it. This book truly is Hallmarkesque but I love those stories so it definitely works for me.
I had wondered what was up with Allen’s younger half-brother Lance every since book one. I had no idea that his story would be so sad. That their egotistical and controlling father had woven such lies to keep the two boys separated was disheartening. I, like Lance and Allen, am having a hard time forgiving the man that wasted so many of their years together with lies. I get that he seems to have turned over a new leaf when he realized he had lost his entire family but it’s still really hard to forgive and forget. And I had hoped for Todd’s bestie Jake’s story but never saw all this coming. He seemed such an upbeat and positive guy that had the PR world of the Stars by the horns but the deep hurt that his family caused was truly awful. Thankfully his foster mom’s Claire and Anita took him in and helped him become the wonderful man he is today. It definitive was nurture instead of nature in his life. What his father (and I use that title loosely with the piece of ungodly trash he really was) did to Jake first, then what unfolded with Derek and what Lena testified to, that man should be locked up and the key never found.
I really enjoyed that we got to catch back up with many of my favorite Crawford City couples. Of course we got Allen, Gob and the girls along with Catherine. But Todd and in extension Linc (whom I really want his and Damien, the kinda bad boy from Tenacious book story). Plus we got to go visit the winery a couple times. I love how all these men and their stories weave so fluidly together.
As I have stated before, I absolutely love this accepting universe that author Blake Allwood has created in small town Tennessee and the men who found the loves of their lives to live with forever. And I can’t wait for more to come. Who needs a lot of sexy times when you have real love and commitment through adversity. That’s the Meat and Potatoes of a story and Blake makes his men shine.
