Even after a year of having an earl for a lover, Dominick still isn’t prepared for the dazzling high society of Bath with its ruinous gossip and scandalous fashions. All he wants is to uncover who his parents were so he and Alfie can return to their quiet life in Scotland. But as long-buried secrets come to light, Dominick finds himself trapped in a web of intrigue that may prove impossible to escape.
When an old acquaintance winds up dead, it’s almost a relief. With a murder to solve, Alfie and Dominick have something to distract them from the jaws of fate slowly closing around them. Assuming, of course, that they can avoid being murdered themselves.
Alfie knows how much learning the truth about his family means to Dominick, but as events begin to spin out of control, it soon becomes clear that knowledge may come with a terrible cost—their happiness, their relationship, and even their lives.
His Lordship’s Blood is the fourth novel in the His Lordship’s Mysteries series.
REVIEW:
Note: This is the fourth book in this series that builds on the previous adventures of Alfie and Dominick. As such it these books should be read in order.
When we last left our intrepid heroes, a maid in a London hotel had recognized Dominick’s ring. She pointed them to Bath to look for Dominick’s birth family – the ring being the item left with him at the workhouse when he was a baby. The search is difficult as they are trying to find a French servant perhaps? They end up staying with Lord Stockton after a mix-up with their accommodation. Then of course as this pair seems to always end up, a murder occurs while they are attending a soiree. The victim appears to have been poisoned according to the doctor in attendance. But why? Any by whom? Mr. Stockton appears to be a bit of collateral damage and so is Alfie. They are both relegated to recovery. Alfie is quite cross that he can’t help investigate and he’s a bit worried for Nick.
As luck would have it, one of the local families is French! And the seem to be quite interested in the goings on – likely since they were some of the last to see Batty, the murder victim, and had dinner with him. The daughter was connected to the murder victim and she is definitely on the hunt for a husband now. Her father and brother are very unhappy with the current government of France. Then Dominick spies a copy of his ring, in gold. This leads to an unbelievable story that puts Dominick in the spotlight that he doesn’t want. And they are no closer to finding out what happened to Batty!
The rest of this story is so fantastical that I’m not going to say anything else.
Oh I loved this 🙂 First there are the myths and legends that find their way into these stories that I just love. The historical context is spot on and I just love all the touches this author provides in these stories. The mystery in this one is fantastical and so much fun if I’m honest. Alfie and Dominick continue to strengthen their relationship and bond. Every step forward cements the fact that these two really are destined for each other. The supporting characters here are surprising and I really enjoyed the whodunit aspect of this mystery. As someone who also enjoys a good political/historical story, this one is certainly one of the most interesting 😉 I am just a huge fan of this series and can’t wait for more. I could read about Alfie and Nick forever. Hint, hint!! Highly recommended! Fans of historical fiction will love this one 😀
