Follow the rules.
That’s what Con Becker does, even when it means denying his own needs. Because one thing he’s learned is that breaking the rules gets you into trouble. It alienates you from your family. It brings you face-to-fangs with death.
So Con sticks to his lab in the basement of the Bureau, examining evidence, updating his spreadsheets, and enduring the pain of his damaged body. Until Chief Townsend sends Con on a field mission with Agent Isaac Molina.
The task seems simple—recruit allies from among the coyote shifter community—but nothing is easy when your alluring partner has no patience for protocols and regulations. And when monsters attack from the darkness.
When obligation collides with desire, Con must decide how to fulfill his mission, keep himself and Isaac alive… and cope with the demons that seek to consume him. And in order to succeed, he just might have to break some rules.
REVIEW:
NOTE: This is Book 11 in this series, but it can certainly be read as a standalone. I recommend reading the other books – mostly because they are really well written and also because the characters from other books are mentioned throughout this one.
Con is injured on the job in one of his first assignments as a field agent for the Bureau of Inter-Species Affair. He’s ready to just give up when the West Bureau Chief offers him a job. He takes it.
10 years later and Con is happily working in his lab for the bureau. He does a lot of training and a lot of work on evidence. Then the chief assigns him a field operation with Isaac Molina, a gorgeous and free-spirited agent. On the surface it seems like a bizarre pairing. But they go about it together. And they accomplish a lot more than their actual assignment and spend more time together than they planned. But it all goes surprisingly well.
Well I completely adore this series and this book is another reason why. Con and Isaac are soooo perfect for each other. The Boss does always seem to get things right 🙂 Poor Con has kept to himself after his injuries and disfigurement. He knows what he looks like. He can’t for the life of him figure out why Isaac isn’t repulsed by his condition – his scars and disabilities. But Isaac is clearly way more interested in the person than the package. Plus he really does respect Con’s strength. Isaac and the Chief already know this because of what he’s accomplished after leaving home on his own at 18. Certainly after their meeting with the shifters and the encounter/battle in Gerard, Con finally is starting to accept that he’s more than what he perceives as his deficits. Isaac is totally Con’s opposite in so many ways. His upbringing, his attitude about sex, his ability to see past the surface appearance make him the ideal person to help Con shift his worldview. I absolutely loved how the author describes this for Con as the story rolls on. I could read about these two forever. This wonderful story brings two opposites together who just fit. Every detail was so perfect and I hope that we get Bureau stories forever! Highly recommended. Fans of this series will adore this story, but I think it’s worth a read even if you’re not familiar with it.
