Tate isn’t a savior. And Chance doesn’t need to be saved. Turns out they’re both wrong.
For Tate McKenna, Navy SEAL sniper turned assassin, rescue missions are part of a past he prefers to forget. But the target in his scope isn’t supposed to be choking someone to death right before his eyes. Saving some kid isn’t part of the job and derails his meticulous plans. Disruptions to his schedule make Tate a grumpy bastard and unforeseen complications just piss him off.
To Chance Forester, being forced into a blacked out SUV isn’t much of a surprise. He figures this trip to see his father is just like all the others until the usual beatdown becomes attempted murder. Turns out, the secrets he thought he’d been keeping from his father, weren’t secrets at all and might end up getting him killed.
When the heat of Tate’s anger morphs into a desire to protect and care for Chance, will Chance allow himself to let his guard down? And will Tate be able to keep his boy safe like a good Daddy should while they’re on the run from those who may want them both permanently silenced?
Chance Encounter is a part of the multi-author series The Elite. Each book can be read as a standalone and in any order. What links these books together is The Anonymous, a club beneath the gritty city where only the elite are welcome.
REVIEW:
A new book in the multi-author series.
Tate McKenna is an ex- NavySEAL sniper turned paid assassin. Losing his best friend changed him. Now he rids the world of the worse kind of scum. Those that escape any consequences for their wrong doings against their fellow man. When his sister Luna, his partner in his missions gets a call for a job that they can’t afford not to take he sets out to take out the city’s mayor. Turns out that the city’s golden boy isn’t quite as shiny and wonderful as everyone thinks. But Tate doesn’t expect the mayor’s goons to be dragging in what appears to be an underage girl to see him. Or that, through his scope, he sees the mayor start beating the crap out of the girl. When Tate gets the kill shot off he knows that he has to get to her and help her. What he also didn’t expect was that she was actually the Mayor’s 24 year old son Chance. And now he’s charged with protecting the beautiful boy.
This book took place in a really short time span. Both men were instantly attracted to the other and even though they said they would take things slow that was very short lived. My problem is that Tate had just literally killed his father. I know he saved Chance from the disgusting piece of garbage that he was but Chance was literally beat up so badly that he was unconscious when Tate went in to rescue him. So I get the whole hero worship stuff. But that is not what the author seemed to going for. But poor Chance had badly bruised ribs, his throat aches from being strangled, a concussion, a broken wrist (that seems to be forgotten that he has a cast after a day or so) and a very sore ankle and Tate just goes to town on him. He even keeps putting his hand on this throat which bothered me every time I read it. His dad had literally tried to choke him to death. Plus he has a hard time swallowing at first and a couple days later is giving a blow job in the shower. I know they were over the top attracted to each other but it just too fast for me with Chance’s battered body.
It was no surprise that Tate filled the Daddy role so well. He literally is a take charge guy and had been mulling around the dominant scene before he met Chance. And Chance needs someone to pamper and adore him. Yes their housekeeper and his grandmother keep track of him but he needed tender love that he never got from his sperm and egg donors. He was just another piece of adornment for them and when he wasn’t perfect his father’s beatings made sure he knew it. How no one ever caught on was frightening. Tate’s sudden attraction to a man did stop me for a moment. I don’t think he had ever been attracted to any man before but Chance was unique to him and the attraction was undeniable for both men.
The epilogue simply didn’t work for me. Tate made $6 million off of Chance’s job, he said before Chance’s job that he was already financially set, Chance has wealth and at least one trust fund and yet he’s still taking assignments. I don’t know if it’s because he is now being forced to by Chance’s first cousin once removed or what but why keep putting yourself out their as a hired killer? The risks are high and Chance needs his Daddy too much. And Chance cleaning his rifle just before he set out on a mission was all wrong. Snipers are very protective of their equipment. They double and triple check everything. They wouldn’t be letting someone else handle their equipment right before they leave. I was happy that they had settled down together and that the budding relationship had worked.
I am usually a huge fan of Ms. David’s work but this one just didn’t click with me as much like they usually do. It was just too fast and didn’t give the whole getting to know you and falling for you vibe I prefer. Just my humble opinion. It’s a good book but missed the mark for me.
